The tip of my NEW dipstick broke off. Should I worry about it? Why do they break?

Where did the tip go? Oil pan? You might want to make sure it isn't freely floating around down there.

Don't know. Pulled it out the other day and it was broke above the fill line.

Given that the part that broke off sits in the oil, and the oil sits below the crank, I doubt there is any real concern. It's not going to go through the oil pump pickup screen, it'll just sit in the bottom of the pan till you pull it off to change a leaky gasket.

I was thinking a counterweight... but... really, anything rotating, I guess...

Y'know, the outer part of the dipstick tube is just a press-fit into the block, if you bump it accidentally you can knock it out of line..
