you can leave the stock one there and just use it with a new longer hose ..
Sorry, do you mean I should leave the stock one where it is and just put the new, longer hose directly onto that stock breather? Then, at the top, in the engine bay or wherever the extended run ends, cap it with a filter or something?
 
Just to wrap this up for future newbies: crawl under your truck, find the breather hoses, and if the breather valves are in good shape, you will only have to replace the hoses with longer ones. You may like to use a more robust hose clamp rather than the spring style that's there. When you pull the hose up off the housing, there's already a nipple there that you can reuse, unless it has been trashed somehow.
 
Mine was all clogged up, soaked in degreaser then blew out with compressed air and re-used good as new with my extended lines (rubber fuel line from Vatozone).
