I am new to the community and will soon be in the market for an 80. As I have been looking I am seeing somewhat different looking models and am wondering what is the difference between an HDJ81 and JDM80?

The 81 is RHD, and there is no "JDM80" but you can have an 80 that was sold in the Japanese Domestic Market, making it JDM.

80 is LHD, 81 is RHD. Of course differences in the options available worldwide mean the 81s, perhaps, will have more options than an 80 that was sold in the US without some of the fancier goodies.

Like center console fridge/freezer! Lucky Far Easterners!! Lol

Can't comment on 80 being only L.H drive. Here in South Africa 80 would be a GX (lower spec) and 81 would be VX (full spec). I have seen German imports L.H drive in the VX configuration. Vin number starting in 81.

So if I had to summarize is the following accurate?

JDM = Japanese market
HDJ = Diesel
FJ = is more relate to the years? 91/92
FJZ = is years 93-97
80 = LHD
81 = RHD

If it's US based the Door tag will contain the designations

If it's imported (aftermarket) into the US there may not be a doortag with all the designations. ... Canada import and JDM are also different in how the vehicle is tagged, correct?

Sorry, looks like we were posting at the same time... let me try this again.

So if I had to summarize is the following accurate? Also trying to be specific to the 80/81 series.

GX = South Africa / German (lower spec)
VX = South Africa / German import (full spec)
JDM = Japanese market
J = Land Cruiser
HD = diesel engine
HZ = diesel engine
F = gasoline engine (91-92)
FZ = gasoline engine (93 -97)
80 = series
81 = series (RHD)

J is the model, HD/F/FZ etc. are the engines. HD is a diesel, F/FZ are gasoline motors. The number is the series.

So an FJ80 like I have is a "J" model (Which means Land Cruiser) with the F motor, and it's an 80 series.

This convention works for just about all older Toyotas. My old pickup was an RN50, where it had an R motor, N meant Hilux/pickup and series 50.

Ok. My bad. So what is he difference 80/81?
I'm probably getting too specific on the GX/VX/VX limited. I'm more trying to capture the main differences so as I'm looking I can quickly understand what I'm looking at, where it's from and he basics RHD/LHD etc.

I am mostly curious because I am seeing imports from Canada and Japan. I am comparing Diesels mostly in that space. Sometimes the Designations were mixing me up. Since I'm new to off-roading and options available I wanted to try and get a basic understanding for a quick glance. I also thought since I'm new and working through it, if I could get a good summary collected it may halo future "mudders" also. :)

Example:
In the FJ/FJZ 80 area I'm pretty settled on the 95-97 FJZ80s
In the Diesel area I'm very unclear and unless I find a rare oddity I'm likely going to have to get an import of some type.

Also, thanks for the clarifications So far. It is great to have a forum of like minded folks willing to help out. This is a big part of what makes this hobby fun.

80 series diesels only had the HD or the HZ motor. I've never seen an HZJ8x before but apparently they exist.

My understanding is that the 81 meant RHD, and yes HD and HZ mean diesel.

Ok. That is what I thought too. Which would mean 80series are always LHD and RHD would then be 81series. (Always is a strong word but something must determine the difference)

That was my understanding but apparently there may be exceptions.

A better bet would be to just buy one and not fret so much about the designation.

Until now I thought that 81 meant sold new in the Japanese market only meaning RHD and that there were no LHD 81 trucks.

If @Grant Woodbridge has seen a LHD 81 that sort of throws a wrench into things.

lets try this another way. you tell us what you want and we will pick out the truck for you since you are making this way too complicated.

another option is just buy a nice FZJ80 and start wheeling, no need to import a diesel. imo you should only go down that road if you are already a cruiser head and do most of your own work.
