Hi,

I just bought an 84 Bj40 . I has a B motor. I ordered a turbo kit, but am not sure if it is for a B or 3b Motor. From pictures I`ve seen on the forum, the exhaust manifold bolts are completely different from my motor. You can`t even flip the manifold upside down cause none of the holes would match. I thought all B series motors exhaust flanges were the same, I guess I was Wrong. :crybaby:

Any input Would be appreciated

Thanks.

What does the plate under your hood say?

As far as know if it's a stock BJ60 sold it Canada they where a 3B (4 cyl) or 2H (6cyl).

It's possible you have a 3B version 2.
I am not sure of the differences between the 3B version 1 and version 2.

Other will probably be able to tell you more.
Best thing would be to see a pic of your engine.

Cheers,
Nick

Most of the BJ`s down here were B motors. I`ll check the plate and post some pics later.

I have a 1978 BJ40 from Canada and it has the "B" motor in it. I have previously heard that the turbo that fits on to the "3B" is incompatible with the "B" motor.

Latin American BJs never got the goodies that the Canadians did. For example, I bet this 84 doesn't even have a roll bar, has drum brakes up front, and of course does not have power steering and the H55F. But I bet it has less rust!

B

Your right about the rollcage, I have to get one, But the 40 I got, Its actually an 83, just checked the papers, Has a bunch of stuff i hadn`t seen on other 40`s down here. Stuff like A/C, Forward facing rear seats, sliding rear windows, Front Disk brakes and Power steering. It has an LX emblem on the front. Someone told me it was Nato Spec, It even uses a funky cloth seat covers .
It has a 4 speed with a split case transfercase.

I`m still waiting on the turbo kit i ordered locally. I`m still not sure if it is for a B or a 3B motor. Hopefully I`ll be in Luck. A friend from CostaRica said that all bj40`s sold en central america were sold with a B motor and not the 3 B.

Look on the timing gear cover on the front of the engine if it is a B motor it will have the Daihatsu "D" symbol on it. The early B's were made by Daihatsu and the mark is a sure way to tell. I have dealt with one before and the a/c bracket and the exhaust manifold bolt pattern were different than the 2B I was working on. They were very similar motors but with minor differences.

turbo

From what I've gathered, the B engine will not turbo like the 3B... the kit you have for a 3B won't work. I've looked into this by searcheing this thread and talking with folks who know more than I do about these things. This was a key factor in my decision to buy a 3B. The reason has to do with the piston design and where the fuel sprays into the piston I think. It may be where something else sparys into the piston... but I'm gonna go with fuel. So. Unless someone here can offer more info and/or contradict what i've learned, no turbo for the B series. Sorry.

The B engine lacks piston squirters for piston cooling, so idealy it isn't as turbo worthy as a 3B. I'd amagine it's the same casting. Comparing them on the outside, you could pretty well put a 3B sticker on a B motor and get away with it. The B motor has the Rad cap on the rad too, not on the thermostat housing, which is better for refilling your coolent, you don't get so many GD air bubbles.

on the back left side of the engine , somewhere around where the edic motor attaches, there should be a big jesus B or 3B in raised letters cast into the block. letters are an inch or two high so kinda hard to miss when your in the right spot.
( unless the engine is covered in a lot of crud...)

Thanks for all the input guys. My motor is a B, And the kit is for a 3 B, So I'm sorta Screwed. The main difference is n the exhaust manifold flange.
I have friends who have turned a B into a 3B by swapping Heads, pistons and such, But I think I'll just keep my B for a while, and put a 14B in it with the turbo Kit. I've got a source for a 14B motor that i got to put together so eventually i'll drop this motor in.

My friends here tell me that the kit will work with a 13 and 14 B motors.

first welcome dude .. ! :flipoff2:

Re-think in this 14B with turbo in 40 series cruser .. ya will never wheel again in your F-350 :grinpimp:

All the late 3Bs (3BII) had this cover. Its likely identical to the 13BT one but missing the blow by port. If you look at the link I posted in my earlier post you'll see nearly identical pictures of Crusher's 13BT manifold to 3BII project.
