The frame is off sitting on the driveway waiting for some sun to take a trip for a little sandblasting session. So its time to clean up the axles. I knew that my rear was a bit too dirty but blamed the leaky aux fuel tank, that was right above it, for it. Till I took a closer look and saw that PO used RTV to seal the cover on, it also seem that he lost couple bolts in the process  I wonder what kind of surprises are waiting for me inside, when I pop that cover off

Long story short, do you guys know any good sources for the gaskets? I'll need two for the rear, and one up front. Also, since we are on the topic, how about kind of gear oil that should be there, and are there torque specs for the cover bolts?

Much appreciated

Check the tech section for your last two q's. As for the gaskets if this is not a resto (like your sig pic) then there is no issue with properly applied gasket maker. Please do replace the missing bolts.

You do likely have something akin to a half melted chocolate shale in your diffs. No worries though, as long as the the bearings and gear teeth are ok just clean it up and use new gear lube. Royal Purps is highly regarded hear for long term use but if your into fording rivers of water/mud then a non-synthetic lube will be cheaper with multiple short term changes

Dealer can still get the gaskets. Front & rear are the same paper gasket, but the inspection cover (rear) uses a cork gasket.

The cork usually does OK by itself -- don't over-torque.
The paper gaskets are flimsy and tear easily, especially if the axles are under the truck (which yours aren't). I always use silicone and the paper, although I'm pretty sure it would be fine without the paper gasket.

x2. I used the OEM paper gaskets with some old blue RTV as a finisher on my e-locker install and it has held so far on the rear, the front is going together next week with the same;)

Hi All:

The blue or black "form-a-gasket" stuff works fine, just follow the instructions.

For lube, you'll want to use a GL4 or GL5 rated gear oil, which typically come as a 80W90, 80W140, or 75W90. Any/all are fine.

Alan

most vehicles i just use straight rtv , never had a problem .

i used the paper gaskets with permetex#2 on them , simply because the old gaskets survived me taking the cover and 3rd out .

no leaks .

If it's just a thin paper gasket, just about anywhere on a LandCruiser, I toss the paper gasket and use a paper-thin layer of just about anyol'color of RTV instead...

I've used the paper gaskets by themselves on the front and rear third member. Have scraped them both over rocks regularly and haven't had any problems with leaks.

Good stuff Thnx.

Now can anyone explain the significance of the "double" threaded studs holding the cover, and why not replace them with bolts?
