LIke the article said, TOyota had designed thier own high tech diesel which was revolutionary. I believe that production costs would be too high versus plugging in an existing powerplant.

So Murf when would this truck be available to order? I am guessing summer of 2015?

That sounds about right.

I imagine they will make these at the San Antonio plant. I took a tour there a few years ago and it was very impressive. They should be able to be deliver by then.

So Murf what would you guys do on the tech side if this all pans out and is true.

Would you guys send techs to be trained or would you hire cummins specialist. I am kind of interested how this will be handled since it would be a domestic engine in a foreign truck.

followed suit with dodge and Nissan? Look how well Cummins has done for Dodge...

Toyota does a good job of doing intensive training and support for new or different technology. New Hybrid release over a decade ago when the Prius came out is a good example.

Most of Dodge's diesel success was based on the old 5.9 Cummins. Great platform, and it can be tweaked up to make lots more power than stock. I'm curious to see how well this downsized engine is received on the market. The technical upgrades that were done in 1998 to up the power of the 5.9 were not particularly popular, but obviously they survived. I wonder if the After Market will jump on this and offer a bunch of high performance ways to spend more money. While the output of the 5.0 sounds pretty good, it is still a bit short of the Big Boys from Detroit. Any plans for Toyota/Tundra to evolve into a true 3/4 or1 ton rated truck? John

My guess would be a quick transition into an additional 3/4 ton if proves to be successful.

Not really sure I would call the Tundra a foreign truck. Foreign owner but isn't the Tundra a North America only truck for Toyota. I know that how it started anyway. FJC started as a North American vehicle but was made in the Japan. That not the case for the Tundra. It is disappointing they aren't planning on using there own power plant. Toyota has been slow to get into the full size truck market. Early nineties with the T100. Wasn't until the Tundra a V8 was a option. Then the 07 with V8 with the power the American consumer wants.

My guess would be a quick transition into an additional 3/4 ton if proves to be successful.

So Toyota and Nissan are going to offer a 1/2 ton diesel truck? Ford, GM and Dodge are all 3/4 and larger correct? I know there have been some smaller diesel trucks in the past including one from Toyota. But I think I would follow the example of what has been successful and beef it up to 3/4 and one ton from the start. Looks like they are checking out a new market not compete in the current one. Just my .02

Dodge Sales

My son indicated there are over 8000 preorders for the new small Dodge diesel pickup and it is not even out yet!

There seems to be a market for diesel pickups. I had a 2004 Ram 2500 with a Cummins and it was the best vehicle I have ever owned (and I am not a Chrysler fan).

I sold it to my son and it is his favorite now!

Dodge really nailed it on this one beating everyone to the market. They had 8500 orders in three days.

Just have to see how the tweener cummins does. Isn't Toyota and Nissan using the same motor?

I'm kinda torn, if I'm going to have a 5l I'm probably just buying a 3/4 ton and get the 6.7.

I have a 14 ram now but I'll probably upgrade again fall 2015 so I'm pretty interested to see how this plays out.

Also GM in the new Canyon/Colorado is going to offer a diesel. Which I hope Toyota follows suit in a few years with the D4D in US for the Tacoma......but I know it is just hopes and dreams.

If it is a Cummins I would not have too much hesitation, but I'd REALLY want to know what kind of transmission it is going to be hooked up to.

I might still have my '99 Ram if I could have kept that POS 47RE together. My wife talked me out of ordering it with a 5 speed. Last time she has any input on my trucks. :-)

I like my DMax and LOVE the Allison 1000, but the rest is typical GM. Good until planned obsolescence and then it all just starts to go to s***.

Actually, I am interested to see where this goes. My dream truck has always been the Toyota Tacoma.

Then with hearing the news about the Colorado coming with that small Diesel has peaked my interest.

People dream about consumer items?

the 47re can be built to handle abuse with the right parts... The last 47rh I built I used all 48re parts minus the od unit and vb. killer transmission

When searching for a Dodge Cummins truck I found the automatic transmissions as the highest debated issue on the forums. Not having any experience I didnt want to take the chance and went with the NV5600. Then I saw the PO bill for a clutch replacement of $1800.

With Toyotas solid automatic transmission record it will be interesting what they use. Im thinking it wont be a Mopar trans though.

Dodge has been running the Aisin auto for a few years now in the Cab and Chassis so I'm sure Toyota would follow suit. http://www.allpar.com/mopar/transmissions/aisin.html Sent from my iPhone using IH8MUD
