The 2f just isn't cutting it towing a boat 70mph down the free way on the h42.

looking for a complete diesel swap for the 86 fj60

looking for something with a 5speed for the highway on 31" tires.

will be making payment via paypal (the wife will only let me buy a new engine if i take her somewhere with nice blue water and white sand for vacation so i can earn some skymiles)

shipping will be to a buisness addy with a fork lift.

looking for something in very good condition/good compression numbers. Want something that i can take across the country with no issues.

Must be able to swap it in without extending my drive shafts/moving my tranny mount so along the lines of a 3b so i can add a turbo. I don't think a turbo 2H would hold up in the heat of the dirty south (4th straight 100+ deg day). Prefer a 3b for the ease of adding a turbo but would consider other options.

what do you guys have?

Well I hate to burst your bubble but a 3B will be hard pressed to tow a boat at 70mph too. It will probably tow it but it won't be a speed demon.

Me thinks you would be happier with an old Dodge Cummins pickup.

thanks for the tip but if i wanted a pickup i would have purchased a pickup...have a wife, two children and 3 large dogs that like to ride in the AC on trips.

If your not familiar with the east....we are pretty close to sea level....where i tow is all east of the mountians, no need for a speed demon but i do need to be able to get better fuel mileage, have a little more power to merge onto the highway, maintain highway speeds on slight grades(65-70mph) and give me better long term reliablity.

I think a turbo 3b would help me out a fair amount matched to a H55

will entertain any diesel engine swap that maintans stock tranny/tc/driveshaft locations. Someone has to have a project that is collecting dust!

Charles is still correct. Even in the flat at sea level a turbo 3B will not move a 60 with 4 people, 3 dogs and a boat at 70 mph. Your acceleration will be worse than withy the 2F.
At the very least you are looking at a turboed 1HZ.

i would think that with @130 hp and @220 ft-lbs of torque a turbo 3b would pull better than a 2f with 256,xxx on it and get much better fuel mileage. Right now i'm getting around 14mpg highway not towing and 12 around town. Around 10...sometimes a little less towing with the AC going on high the entire time. The biggest issue is on hills i can usually only max out at 55mph...60 if i hit 75 before the hill.

Then again a stock OM617 turbo mercedes diesel has about those same #'s from the factory and they are underpowered as all get out in the Benze.

You will certainly get better fuel mileage, but it will be slow. Maybe you can find someone that lets you drive a BJ60 to get your own impression?
cheers,
J

i would love to find someone local with a bj60...we don't get many north of the border cruisers this far south.

I started to search locally aswell for other diesel swaps....might have a good source on a 93 6.5 turbo, should give me the towing ability i need.

got a 4bd1t on the way...should be here mid next week. Thanks guys

Well, you will have to move your tranny cross member for the H55 swap. And I will also confirm that you won't be pulling your boat at 70 mph in a diesel 60, unless it is a looonng downhill grade.

If I were you, I would be buying this truck...

Cheers.

Towing in overdrive is not recommended.

the ranger OD has two settings, a 1:1 ratio and a 27% over stock gear setting. The H55 only gives you 16% higher final gear than the H42 IIRC

it's not OD in the same sense as an automatic transmission and will probably require some down shifting when in tow going up grades. fj60's are a heavy beast. The Ranger torque OD is built to handle a little over 400ftlbs of torque...i don't think my isuzu engine will be pushing it's limits.

The only real down falls i see with the ranger from reading reviews of those who have owned them is the extra slop in the drive train (have to shift slowly) and it's noisey which i already have a screaming 2 yr old and an ADD 10yr old so noise i can handle.

I won't have the super low 1st gear of the H55 but i have yet to do any off roading since i got the rig so chances are i won't miss it.

I have not yet purchased the ranger OD and i'm waiting on a few people with an H55F/31"tires and 3.70 gears to tell me what RPM they are at when doing 70mph.

If that magic number is less than 2300 i may go ahead and just get an H55...if it's more the OD is my only option unless i want to go NV4500 or larger tires...neither is an option i am willing to go with.

I had the whole setup you were looking for. I have a whole hj60 with a professionally rebuilt 2h with a h55. I wanted 5k for the whole thing but I may just be swapping the driveling into a 62 I just found

I've already purchased a diesel engine and have an H55 that should arrive to me in the next week-2weeks.
thanks though

i did contact you about the tranny a few weeks ago lol
