Hi,
Im currently about half way through fitting an LS2 V8 into my '96 HZJ70. It was originally diesel, and has a very confusing fuel tank! The tank has 8 hoses in total going to it. Inside the tank are all sorts of baffles and chambers and pipes, and i cant see how it all works. Next to the fuel filler a small hose goes into something that looks like a cannister and another goes into a little thing that may be a check valve as an owner's manual ive read suggests.

Mainly Im worried about whether it is safe to use petrol in the tank, or whether the fuel guage sensor could possibly cause an explosion, being designed for use with diesel and not petrol.

anyone know if this is common practice to use the diesel tank with petrol?
anyone know how the original tank system works!?

Cheers

The tanks are all the same between diesel and petrol, its the plumbing that can differ a little.
The lines around the filler tube are also the same.
Where they differ is the fuel pick ups for the HZJ7* have only 2 fuel lines to the engine bay,1 for fuel supply and 1 for return, where as the petrol engines have 3 with the 3rd being to the charcoal canister.
I think you would be ok if you used a FJ6/7* petrol fuel pick up.

I did a conversion but went from petrol to diesel ,so I blocked off the vent line to the charcoal canister.

One small difference is the filler tube as the petrol tube for unleaded has a restrictor to stop the wrong fuel being added.
Again you could use any petrol 70/73/74 series filler tube

if in doubt run a ground strap from the filler neck to the tank...other than that use the factory diesel for petro...

well thats good to know theyre the same,
I suspected this wouldnt be an issue because I havent been able to find any evidence of the contrary.
My main area of concern was the level sensor. it has wires going into the tank! Is there anywhere I says definitively that the petrol and diesel sensors are the same?
If this was in a Refinery the sensor would have to be 'intrinsically safe' and cost more than a whole car!

The safety of the old diesel is definately something I'll miss.

From looking at the EPC ,the part is the same for all petrol and diesel models from 84-01.
Check with the dealer to be sure.

This is helpful information for me as I am in the middle of a diesel swap for my 4 runner. Do you know of any online diagrams of what the fuel line/ fuel tank should look like on a diesel 2lt? I have also heard that you want a larger fuel line for diesel. Can you attest to that?

I cant see any reason why you would need a bigger fuel line for a diesel, considering they use less fuel.
