Well, I've gone around and around with my 2F since I bought my '60 a couple of years ago (long, crazy sob story). I've finally come to the conclusion that the engine is terminal and needs to be replaced. I want to run biodiesel anyway.

That begs the questions - What is involved in a diesel swap and which Toyota engine/tranny/t-case would be the best fit?
Can I use the existing fuel tank and just plug/remove the evap stuff? Engine mounts? Crossmember? Driveshaft mods? 24V conversion?

Any bits of experience and wisdom you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

The easiest swap will probably be a 2H from a canadian HJ60 simply because the engine was offered in that body style so everything you need exists, veyr little "custom" work. Some other favorites are later model 1HZ's and 1HD-T's but they are more $$ and a little more involved.

Run a seach in the Int'l Section for diesel swaps and you can read up on a couple different options. I can tell you now though you will want a turbo (be it factory of aftermarket) one way or another.

Below is my summary of the 1HZ swap i did to my HJ60.

1HZ->HJ60

Thanks for the great info guys. Can you give anything specific like whether or not I can use the original fuel tank, or if any of these diesels will bolt up to an H55F?

Are the 3B and 4B that were mentioned Toyota engines? How many cyls? Turbo?

Again, my thanks.

The 3B is a 4 banger Toyota engine and bolts to the H55. At least mine bolts up fine :) The 3B is not a factory turbo'd engine but takes an aftermarket turbo really well. If you want a factory turbo look for a "T" at the end of the engine number, ie: 13B-T 4 cyl. or 12H-T 6 cyl. The 4BT is a Cummins engine, the same as the 6 cylinder one in the Dodge pickups but with 2 cylinders knocked off!! I wouldn't bet on the H55 there although you'll have other options.

Mine is the 12H-T 6 cylinder direct injection turbo diesel and it runs te H55 5 speed manual, all factory fitted.
It has the aftermarket long-range tank and I've never owned the petrol version so I can't tell you if there is a difference. There is no electronic involved so that makes the conversion easier and the engine more reliable. There is no need for suspension lift, or modifying your mounts, etc because they are factory fit.

If you could get hold of a diesel wreck for cheap enough then you would know that you had all of the necessary parts. My vehicle has now travelled over 503500 km's and still going strong. I'm also looking into running it off biodiesel. I know that the 2H engine (same engine but without turbo and direct injection) is a good engine to run bio-diesel. I get over 22 mpg (US gallons) out of mine on a trip, and I guess about 16 mpg (US) around town. The 12H-T is one of the best Turbo diesels there is and if your cruiser is in good shape and you want to keep it for a long time then I reckon that it is good conversion.

I think that Canada may have the 12H-T but Japanese importers may be another good choice.
There is one going up for auction at a wrecking auction in Brisbane today so they are available here.
Just for interest:

Unfortunately, I can't go and have a look as I'd like to buy it myself!

Canada got "B", "3B", and "2H" diesels in 'Cruisers from Toyota. All other 'Cruiser diesels were brought over by other vendors. The US got NO diesel 'Cruisers at all :)

Be careful with "B" series engines. Great motors but will not bolt to 4 speeds or 5 speeds that were designed for F or H series motors. the input shaft on B series transmissions are different in length and maybe splines, can't remember.

I have a Cummins 4BT in my 60 and love it more and more everyday. Do a search for "Fritota" and you will find my conversion. Do a lot of research and you will find what it is best for you.

first off spend some time on the international forum. lots of great info there.

second, congrates! the deciding factor to go diesel is the best.

I have a 3b in my BJ60. it goes nicely. Slow but efficient. Soon turbo and all.

I am not sure if a 12h-t is as simple as a 2h to bolt to your tranny, but if it is then thats the engine you want. its super powerful and semi fuel conserving.

go to the international forum, search the different engine models and you will learn lots......good luck!

I dont see why you could use your original tank. Just make sure it has aired out for a while. I bought and had installed an Opposite Lock 50 gallon diesel tank in my 60.

Brownbear: the 12H-T is based on the 2H engine so as the same to bolt to the H55.
Also, a lot of people using waste vegetable oil add a percentage of ULP (15%?) so a little bit left in the old petrol tank wont hurt the diesel fuel.

The diesel engine doesn't mind a little gasoline left overs. I've been told by some folks that you can mix gas and diesel a a fairly high percentage if necessary, though I haven't tried it.

Grease cruiser,

I understand that you were forced to go SOA as apposed to your original SUA with the diesel. Is true?
Sorry,
I have not checked this thread for awhile. Yes, I went SOA because ALCAN SPRINGS SUCK! Read my thread about it. I am SOA now and very happy. I think my 60 actually sits a little lower than when I had the 4" ALCAN springs. The ride with SOA is much better as well.

The small amount of gasoline left over in the tank is not going to blow any head off unless of course you don't add any diesel to it! I've had folks tell me they add a gallon of regular to each tank of diesel. I have not done it and I won't be but neither will I get a new tank for the FJ45LV when I drop a diesel in it.

Where are you in Oregon? I've got a 60 with a 13BT I put in last March. You should take it for a spin. 26/28 mpg highway and 20 in town. Plenty of power too.
