Diesel Expedition Rig, 4bt vs 6bt (or a Toyota engine..)

As someone doing a Toyota Diesel swap I would so far say it hasn't been too bad getting in parts. I have some parts getting shipped in from Canada right now, but thats because they make my life easier and I like Toyota parts. The big thing is just tracking down the parts and thats half the fun. I would recommend though buying either a half cut or an entire drive train. It will save you some headaches. Myself and another person I know both started with just 1HZs and takes some work to find the proper H55 to mate up. Also, as certain parts come up, I pick them up as back-ups.

I went with Toyota because I knew it would fit without too much work, last me a long time, and its cool. That did play a little bit into me selecting the 1HZ.

Stock gearing-4:11 differential ratio in both trucks. The auto has 285 75 R16's and I have 315 75 R16's in my truck with the 5 speed.

The H55F is a good tranny. However, I would not recommend it for an 80 series if that is what vehicle you will be swapping in. I personally like the H150F. It is not at all sloppy and works very well. The 5th gear isn't tall enough for highway cruising at 75MPH though. It needs a 6th gear, but I am very happy with it otherwise.

Not too sure but Im looking forward to a turbo spooling. Its more for the power than an increase in mileage or efficiency for me. Being in the mountains around here, the extra "help" to get up the slopes would be fantastic. I can imagine that with the power increase, I will probably lose some mpg just enjoying the power but then Ill pull it back to normal driving. Doing some tests on the motor right now to make sure that she is healthy enough for it and then Ill go from there.

You make a good point about the terrain and mpg. I have read a few post that suggest that adding a turbo could improve fuel economy, depending on the right foot of the driver. What test are you running to see if the engine can handle it? I would be interested to know.

There is a sense of fun and adventure in tracking down parts, kind of like an automotive treasure hunt! :) It is comforting to hear that parts can indeed be found! How do they prices compair? Are they outrageous? Can I ask why you went with the 1HZ? I am leaning towards the 1HD-T of 1HD-FT myself. Also, what would you have to say about Workhorse's advise about the H55 and the H105? Any experience with the H105?

Great to hear that you were getting that fuel economy with the stock ratios! I will be hoping for that same! For what reason(s) would you not recommend the H55F in the 80?

My 4bta powered 80 series will be for sale soon...if that helps..

:hhmm:

Have you considered the Isuzu 4BD1T?

Stronger than any of them.
Noisier than the 6 cyl toyotas but not by much.
More efficient than the 6 cyl toyotas.
Sleeved engine, inline pump.
Factory turbo with oil squirters etc.
Stock injection pump can deliver roughly twice the stock fuelling.

A toyota 14BT or 15BT would be quite a similar result and well worth looking into as well.

The length of the H55F transmission with transfer case is shorter than the H150/1 set up. Someone on MUD did a 3B/H55F install in his 80 and had to do quite a bit of modification due to the length differences. Do a search and have a read.

For my $ you just can't beat Factory Toyota in/for a Factory Toyota. That is my opinion and nothing more FYI.

Happy swapping...

It is a lot of fun, it does take some time to gather parts, but once everything is in, it is just normal maintence at that point. After a trip to TN next week for parts I will be around $5800 in parts and shipping, and that is a complete set up at that point, but I will spend around $700 to rebuild some items. Thats where things get pricey. I am also doing a full rebuild while the engine gets swapped, so things will add up more. Somethng I would look into is are you doing the swap or someone else. I am doing the swap myself, but I also know I have people in the area doing the same swap into multiply vehicles, so I know I have the resources to do it. If I had a shop doing the work I would of just had my 2F rebuilt and call it a day because of the cost. I like working on my own stuff and learning.

I went with a 1HZ because they are more common in the states plus I had seen the swap done into a 40. I also don't need a ton of power. All I wanted was a 2F with better fuel economy and a little bit higher top in speed. 7MPG and a top speed of 71 going down hill wasn't cutting it. If I can get around 20MPG and 75mph I will be pretty happy.

I believe 1HD-T or a 1HD-FT are good engines. If I could of gotten my hands on one I would of. Part of the 1HZ was it was for sale when I made up my mind on getting a diesel. Thats one of the things that drives the certain details with the Toyota diesel, unless you have lots of time and money.

I will be running a H55 do to length issues. I am pretty sure a H105 is longer and would cause me no to have no rear driveshaft. I would go with whats closest to stock in an 80. An H55 is stock in the later model 40s and it is a transmission that Toyota used for a long time, so I have no problems running it at all. I will also be running a splitcase. I could see the transfercase be a place of issue because you are currently set up for AWD. One last thing on tranmissions, get one with the right input shaft. It makes life much easier than buying one and then swapping it.

They have likely had (numerically) more HDJ 'cruisers through their doors than anyone else in western Canada. They have most parts on hand to rebuild or maintain Toyota diesels.
