Diesel engine for 200 series in USA

...medium income according to Toyota is $240,000 for owners of the 5.7...that is why 381hp matters and a diesel would never work...

FWIW and I posted somewhere else in this thread is I know lots of much-better-off-than-we folks who would and did happily purchase a spanking-new diesel Mercedes when the option was at them.

This thread really needs a serious clean-up in aisle 5. The personal stuff is kind of lame.

Is there a moderator in this section or is it still wild-west here since no one really knows what they are talking about with the new Land Cruiser?

agree.

Again, I'm on the diesel side every day of the week and Toyota USA can :censor: for not bringing us at bare minimum a manual tranny and cloth seats

I've been staying out of this rediculous war (that I was once a part of). I could not pass on responding to this though.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? USA buyers of POC crossovers demand leather and all the goodies. BE OBJECTIVE! You REALLY think that the auto makers would sell very many new:

Escalades with manual and cloth?
Cruisers with manual and cloth?
X5's with manuals and cloth?
H2 with manual and cloth?

THIS IS HILARIOUS!

Brake horse power is harder for me to comprehend as I'm used to Kilowatts and Newton meters.....

Just to put it into metric perspective, the 5.7 yields 270kW of power and 530 Nm. It gets from 0-100 km/hr in 7.8 seconds.

The 4.5 turbo diesel manages 195kW of power and 650 Nm of torque. 0-100 km/hr in 8.6 seconds.

So, yes the 5.7 gasser has almost one whole second faster acceleration from 0 to 100 km/hr (roughly 62 mph) than the 4.5 oiler.

Which one would I pick? :hhmm:

Testing in US was from 6.8-7.2 sec by the way.

This is an off-road/highway forum, right? It ain't about towing 5th-wheels or the best 0-100 at the local track. I'm struggling to find a single argument that the 5.7 is a better off-roader than their world-offered diesel counterparts. I've driven the 5.7 and it hauls ass and gets me from point A-to-B screaming up the mountain highways great...but...I'll change my mind if someone can show me the torque rise in the off-highway drivable RPM range and the fuel economy to take me 'round Canyonlands.

That's a load of crap. So the engine makes all the difference in the world off-road, huh? OK, so I guess an 80-series petrol sucks off-road compared to a 100-series TD? Good God!

Struggling to follow your logic Shotts. How on earth did you construe that meaning from Pskhaat's post?? However, speaking as one who has had both an 80 petrol and a 100 diesel I'd say yes, no contest - enginewise. Of course that's only part of the story for off road performance as you would know. Torque and range is important but so is running gear, suspension, lockers etc

Love your 100 build thread btw. Good info to digest.

He said Toyota :censor:

That's rediculous! Toyota is not :censor: In fact...they (like most others) are SPOT ON at proving what NEW CAR buyers want in the area of the globe they live in.

In the US it's massive luxury, raw power, and all the key features.

In other countries it's diesel...just read this thread.

Toyota does not :censor:

My God...I'd die if I seen a stripped down Escalade with cloth and a manual tranny. Can you find ONE made by the factory in the US? Tahoe?

Oh...and thanks much on my thread!

Hold on!

You could insall a chip that propel you to 360hp and 870NM. I don't think you could beat that with a gas version.

Comparing 0 to 60 is not quite the reference, as 4wd require torque...

From your sig line it looks like you have the vehicle we're all discussing here. I for one would take it over a 'gasser ANY day!!

You should hear the tecinox exhaust...

Same here. I would be actually saving up for a 200 series turbo diesel LC in USA. As it stands today, nothing interests me over my 100 series on any new car lot in the USA.

Yes UZJ100 that a magnificent car you have, I friend is rolling with the HDJ100 with an Adonis chip, and I got to tell you that he have an unbelievable torque...

atlas78,

We only get the V8 Gas engine in the states. I would prefer to have diesel however Toyota USA decided for us on which engine we can purchase.

Please post pictures and video of your VDJ200. The 5 speed twin turbo must be a blast to drive.

Well, it seems to me that yes, other countries do demand a seriously different vehicle than USA/Canada... HOWEVER, the Escalade is more in line with a Sequoia than it is a Landcruiser... I guess the hard core guys will either be stuck importing one (I believe it's possible to import from central america without too much hassle right?). Perhaps a 105 series for me! :D

On another note... I really don't understand why Toyota markets the Landcruiser at all in the USA; at least in it's current form with independant suspension, and all the luxo goodies... ! I mean, they don't even sell very well at all anyway. For 99% of buyers the Sequoia just makes SO much more sense, and for the others who NEED the luxo goodies, there's Lexus 570.... My only point here is that as much as I love my machine, I hate the fact that it's really lost the offroadability in comparison to my old 80 series. This is why, in my belief, IT (the 80 series) was the last TRUE landcruiser sold in USA/Canada... Just go to other countries where the new ones are still available built like our old 80's to prove it! I'd love to import a 105 series, or even a 200 series with solid axles and all the offroad goodies one day!

Sorry, just venting, lol!

You have no idea of the real truth. That's not a dig...it's just reality. You have been wheeling a locked and modified 80. Your 100 is stock. If you end up outfitting your 100 similar to the 80 then you will THEN find out the 100 gives up almost nothing to the 80 on 95% of the trail you can go on. In other words it's lost very little in offroadability though you gain so much (over the old series).

Then we have to 200-series...this forum...what an amazing example of the latest technology and quality available to the consumer. Let us all take a moment and drool about owning one. You lucky 200 owners! To say the 80 was the "last true LC" is plain blasphemy.

On another note... I really don't understand why Toyota markets the Landcruiser at all in the USA; y!

Toyota sells the Land Cruiser in the USA because it is actually a much larger market than you might think. Sure its nowhere near Africa or Australia but the 200 sold about 6k in its best year, it is now down to about 2500-3000 units. That is HUGE compared to some other countries that are much smaller and have much less sales.

USA sells about 10k units of the LC/LX combined, Canada sells about 500-750 LX570 per year.

Also, the profit on one LC sale is huge, think about it this way. For every one Land Cruiser sale, how many Toyota Yaris models would you have to sell to equal the $75k on the LC? You have to pay labour, buy supplies, build, ship, distribute at least 5 Yaris models to equal $75k

My 80 was stock aside from 285's and a cdl button. I have a cdl button on my 100. No lockers vs No lockers... I don't know of a better comparison... I just came back from a trail I used to do all the time in my 80; the 100 did it fine, after my second try on a different line... also I was pushing it more. I did that in my 80 unlocked without even wheelspin. Please understand that my 100 has a limited slip (which proved to be relatively innefective for some reason. I think the 80 shone due to the solid axle and better flexing of its platform. I've seen this phenomena on hells crack in Moab too a few times on youtube. It seems that what the 80 does with ease, the 100 can do too; just with more pushing and shoving. I really not trying to argue that the 100 isn't capable offroad... It's just becoming quite obvious based on my own personal experiences. I don't know how better to put it. I wouldn't replace my 100 due to its size and much better rear seat room than my 80 for our family... Just wish I didn't have to push it as hard as my 80 to get the same result.

I don't know... Maybe I need to drive an 80 again to really jog my memory, but this is what I recall... In my 80, I was walking over stuff unlocked, that other trucks simply couldn't even do (unlocked too of course).
