Detroit locker for BJ71!

From what I have learned in my research into installing the same in my BJ74, the Detroit & Aussie lockers cannot be fitted in a limited slip diff.

Wayne Smith of Luxury Imports and a few others have recommended moving the limited slip to the front and moving the front diff to rear for the install of the Aussie/Detroit locker. They also recommend adding a shim to the limited slip so there is less slip and more "lock". This will improve performance without jeopardizing the Birf.

I know Greg_B has an Aussie Locker up front on his 60 series. He seems to like the setup and has not, to my knowledge, had any Birfield problems.

I had given serious consideration to leaving the ltd slip in the rear, shimming, and adding the Aussie up front. The Aussie locker web site says front install is fine. However, that may be more a marketing generalization than a best practices recommendation.

Yes, but installing the Detroit EZ Locker "lunchbox locker"!
I will install the Detroit Soft Locker that has its own carrier.

Here, in Italy, nobody uses Detroits in Toyotas, let's try!:)

my .02 is to get an aussie or lockrite over a detroit. :D

I had a lockrite on my suzuki, why do you prefer lockrite than detroit?

I guess I should say I like the ez locker/lockright/aussie.

I don't like the allen bolts. Not fun if you break an axle either.

my .02

Detroits are not very popular in Cruisers simply due to the fact that they are pricey. You can generally get an ARB for less and it is completely selectable and nearly as tough. It doesn't matter what kind of rear end you have now, (limited slip, factory locking, open, etc. ) since the whole carrier will be replaced by the Detroit.

Wesintl, do you mean the allen bolts on detroit carrier?
Do they break often?

Thank you very much, guys!:)

Ah, ok, I see.

Here the Arb locker (without compressor) costs 800 euro/1000 usd more or less!
It's too much, doesn't it?

what's the cost on a detroit there? here it's ~$600 for a detroit and arb's run ~$700 http://www.cruiseroutfitters.com/arb_locker_text.html

I'm with Bruce... I dunno why anyone would want one when you still have to set up the gears etc. same as an arb install. Might as well have selectability (even if it's more) if your going in there if not just buy and aussie/ezlocker, etc.

Check to see what shipping runs from a few vendors here. I know some ship international.

still my .02, you may be very happy with a detroit as i'm sure other are... :)

It's true, but having the LSD carrier I can't put a Lockright/Aussie in that, so I have to change the carrier in both cases, finding an open diff or substituting the front one with the rear one!
I think I'll order the detroit in Germany: better prices than Italy!

In Italy, there is a diff specialist that has developed a LSD/E-locker for landcruisers, like detroit E-locker!
It's interesting, but the price is 1500 USD!

P.S. Sorry for my english! Thank you very much!

I've installed the Detroit on my 71 and I'm very happy about it!
Really an awesome product!
Thank you all for the useful advices!
