i got my 60 running after much angst dealing with the crankshaft pulley. i am really impressed with what i have. exterior and interior are pretty good for an 85FJ60. more importantly, it starts right up, runs like a top, everything seems to work on it too, which is always a big plus. there might be some issues with the brakes, but i will get to that right away.

the only big issue, and it is possibly a big one, is it was desmogged by the PO.

i can't get him to respond and send me the parts, which i will need since i will have to get this to pass emissions. i think he sold them or something....

i bought the emissions manual from sor, but it is hard to start when there are really no existing parts to work with here!

i am planning on having Gumby/Todd help me out with it if possible, since he lives in the same town as me.

my mechanic said, that i should just take my chances and see what happens when i get it tested for emissions. i can't possibly see it passing though......any suggestions on this such as a parts list or something? i am bit stumped. also, the smog pump is hooked up and has the belt on it, but it only has 1 hose that is on it and it runs right back to itself...weird. ???

I'd try to find somone who is parting out a 60. IF you can get the whole package at once it would be a lot easier. The visual smog inspection will most likely require the air pump, EGR and cat converter. Do you have to pass a dyno smog test or a stationary two speed test? The dyno test will likely require most of the smog system to be functional. The two speed test is much easier to pass. If the engine and carb are in good shape you might sqweak by with just a functional air injection/cat system. The emissions book will show what all is missing and how to hook it up. Did you buy the truck in Illinois? Most states make the seller responsible for passing emissions tests. Was the "desmog" condition made clear when you bought it? You may have some legal recourse if you want to go that route. I'd look for a non running complete 60 to scavange parts from.

60wag, thanks for the input. i will have to peruse the web to see if i can find the parts i need. no recourse on the fact it was desmogged. i knew about it at the time when i purchased it.
seller was out of maine, so did not have to have it tested there. i was told the smog parts would be sent, but hasn't happened thus far. testing here is not too bad, since they won't open the hood. it is just a 2 speed test from what i hear. carb and engine seem to be pretty good. carb is new in past 2 years.
i might have to drive it around for a while before taking it to get tested....that worked on a junker i used to drive when i lived in Texas. the test was the same there too, 2 speed. i guess we'll see. thanks again.

If there's no visible inspectiom under the hood you may be OK - just run the tank real low and add a bunch of white gas. It's cheating but works surprisingly well. ;)

Make sure that the engine is completely warmed up when taking the test. Let it idle in the parking lot with the air conditioner on for a while. this will allow the engine to burn the fuel more completely and make it easyer to pass emissions.

Having the cat up to operating temp is helpful - especially if its the original cat and is getting weak. Driving 2 miles at 50mph or faster will heat it up. It takes a good 10-15 min to cool down.
