payment sent for idler pulley and cap and plug set

Jim,

Idler pulley received, but won't fit in stock mount. Do I have the wrong one? 1980 FJ40. Should I cut it?

Sorry, think the pic posts upside down on my phone.

Yes, that is the wrong bracket. The idler fits 1981-87 2F engines (or the smog pump & PS brackets from 81-87).

Does your 1980 have a stock 79-80 PS system on it?
If yes, a slightly modified bracket can be fabricated & sent to you.
If no PS, then an idler is not needed. The belt should run crank-fan-alt, and that's all that's needed.

Jim,
Yes I have added stock power steering setup. So I do need an idler pulley to tension the belt to water pump.

Please send me what I need & I'll send this one back to you.

Greg

Greg, sorry I got busy in the shop this week and didn't check back in this thread. The two dimensions that can change on the AP or idler is the height (from pivot bolt to lock bolt) and the depth (length of pivot sleeve).

Your truck definitely has the short 75-80 lower pivot.

Did the PS pump and adjuster bracket (bolted to bottom of PS mount) come from a 81-87 2F (usually an FJ60 donor), or is it from a 79-80 2F? That determines the height of the bracket. Or you can measure that yourself, and see if it matches with the idler you have.

If it is an 81-87 adjuster, then you can just cut the lower pivot until it just drops into the mount.

If it is a 79-80 adjuster, then I have to make up a different assembly.

Jim, the adjuster is the original adjuster from the 1980 smog pump - bolts to the lower bolt on water pump. The power steering setup was purchased from a guy here on Mud from his FJ40 part out, think it was an 81, but not sure. Got the steering box, pump, mount, hose, etc. Here are a few pics if that helps. The adjuster is loose at this point. Thanks for your help. Greg

OK, I see what you're doing. The OEM setup substituted the WP mounted AP adjuster arm for an adjuster arm bolted to 2 M8 bolts on the bottom of the PS pump bracket.

FWIW, the adjuster arm should have a spacer sleeve behind it and a longer bolt.
Click on this pic to open it in correct colors.

Spacer # 90560-11107 and long bolt #90101-10013 are needed to get the arm in alignment.

Also in the pic is the different adjuster arm that bolts to the bottom of the PS mount, if so equipped. #17318.

So the big question is will the adjuster arm swivel upward enough to hit the top hole on the idler, and not hit the bottom of the PS bracket? If you think it will, then cut the lower sleeve to length to drop into the bottom bracket.

LMK what you think...

Jim, I stuck the pulley in upside down to test the height. It does fit. When pulled to tighten the belt, I have about 1/4" clearance to the bottom of the PS bracket.

I can't see the pic you posted above, but I will order the spacer & longer bolt. Should I try to get the adjuster arm also, or do you think I'm fine with the adjuster I have? Like I said, it's close, but does not touch when tension is on the belt.

Excellent work! Yes, you can just trim the lower sleeve to drop into the bracket, then use the original 75-80 AP adjuster.

If the spacer sleeve is NLA, then use a stack of 7/16" washers to determine the spacer needed to get the arm aligned w/ the idler. Replace stack of washers w/ a piece of 3/8 pipe cut to the same length.

Note that the spacer sleeve length has varied through the years as they jiggered around w/ the bend in the AP/alternator adjuster arm and which pulley the accessories were running on. IOW, if somebody says "I have the spacer sleeve you need", there is a chance that it will not be the correct length for your particular combination of parts.

Jim, got any more idlers in stock you can send out. Need one for a 81-87.

Thanks

Jim, got any more idlers in stock you can send out. Need one for a 81-87.

Actually out of them today, but have the pieces, will be welding some together on Monday. Send some monies and yours will be the first one in the mail.

FWIW, The billet EGR blockoffs are currently out of stock, and machine shop may not get to run them for another week due to holidays.

Hello Sir- Sent an email through IH8MUD...not sure if there is another thread I should be posting to...would like to see about getting carb rebuilt and dizzy re-curved from 84 FJ60...
