Design life of a 100 series engine and drivetrain

I was told that the 4.7 is a copy of a Mercedes design that Toyota refined. I don't know if that's true or not, but that would fall in line with the general concept that the Germans & Americans are usually the innovators and the Japanese tend to be skilled at copying, refining, and streamlining the manufacturing, assembly, and quality control process.

The leaking boots definitely is going to be something that happens with every 100 owner at some point in time. I don't think it is a weakness, just a part with a lifespan like any other rubber part. My mechanic spotted leaking boots at 87k miles when I had my t-belt replaced and a 4wd service from Mr. T.

I'm at 101,000 now and the truck has been up to the bumpers in mud and slush numerous times, pretty much on a weekly basis or more often. I'm just now getting around to taking it in for the boot replacement next week. I'll let everyone know if I get to replace CV's too because of this neglect or any other interesting things they find. The front end is still whisper quiet or else I would have forced myself to take it in sooner.

Quote for replacement of CV Boots: $540 P&L. I can live with that every 80-100k miles.

My bought-from-new '98 UZJ100 just passed the 100K miles, still no major problem, the problem I had was the front shock overheated and blew out at Death Valley (thanked to a loaded truck and the washboard dirt roads) I am looking forward for another uneventfull 100K miles....

I would expect the engine and drivetrain to outlast how long you want to own the truck. Up until last year the 100 used the same 4 speed tranny as the 94-97 80, which was known to be a very reliable unit. As others said, the V-8 has had no real known problems, and likely it will go 300k+ miles with regular oil changes and service.
