1999 Toyota 4Runner – 4WD Limited w/ Locking Rear Diff – Needs Engine Swap

Did a leak-down and compression test after lifting it, adding tires, etc… and unfortunately, she needs an engine swap. I just need something more reliable at this point in life (so I bought and built out a 2020 TRD Pro “Stormtrooper” instead, haha).

The 4Runner was starting and driving (with the risk of stalling) up until last week. It now makes a single, loud click when trying to start, which is likely due to a failing starter motor or solenoid — common on these and easy to replace. Most symptoms still point to low compression as the core issue, and the Magnuson supercharger is also installed but essentially shot.

If I were in a place to have a project car, I’d keep her and do the swap myself — but I just can’t right now.

    • Rear brakes still need to be done (after rear axle seal is replaced)

Summary:

Bought in 2021 for $16,000 and put another $17,000 into upgrades and maintenance. She’s got tons of life left for the right person — just needs an engine swap (and now a starter) to be a beast again.

If you're looking for a clean, rare platform for a 4WD build with a locking diff and great parts already installed, this could be your project.

Asking $7,000 OBO. Located in Denver.

UPDATE: just replaced the starter/it can now start, but it takes some gas to get going and can stall anywhere between 1 and 50 minutes into a drive. Can tow it to you for free as long it's somewhere within 100 miles. Otherwise, bring a trailer just in case.
