I wanted to try this in my GX470 since I was going to be towing this summer. My GX has 174k miles and has routinely used Penzoil platinum 5w-30 Synthetic we 0 issues. I wanted to try Delo 400 XSP Synthetic in 5w40. My LX450 loves Rotella but I hate the smell. Any issues with running 5w40 Delo?

Thanks

Is your oil pressure too low with 5w30?

No it's perfect. I just wanted to try the Delo since the Rotella did so well with my high mileage LX450. I thought that maybe the HD Delo synthetic might be good towing with 40 weight in the hot summer.

My suggestion would be to read up on some modern oil data. A lot of folks don't have a good understanding of how oil works and are basing decisions off of old outdated ideas/hearsay. For instance the heavyweight oil for heat dissipation debate. You see a lot of the I run Xw-40 because it dissipates more heat. Whereas guys who really geek out on oil would tell you oil flow dissipates more heat than oil weight. In which case you would want a thinner weight oil. I also seriously doubt there are too many people out there in the 4x4 community monitoring there oil temps for any empirical data.

Ask this question at "Bob is the oil guy" BITOG. You should get plenty of informed opinions.

I would stick to spec (5w30) as the 2UZ is not necessarily "new" in design, but is light years ahead of the 1FZ. Tractor motor vs modern motor. I haven't had a problem with using spec oil year round in the GX and put a lot of miles on, off, and towing.

1FZ is apples to oranges in this debate. 5W-30 in the 2UZ is what I would suggest. I will be at 300k on one of mine this year and it doesn’t sip and ounce of oil running 5W-30. My 1FZ was another story, 15W-40 in that old tractor engine.

If your running 5w30 you may as well just bump it to 0w-30. Even more startup benefit, and no downsides. The cost is even the same.
