Dear friends.

I have a 96 turbo diesel 24 valve.

Went on a road trip on the weekend. About 50 kms into the ride a hesitation started.

at around 2300 rpms in third gear and above this hesitation starts ( its a manual by the way) as i push through the hesitation power drops off at just over 3000rpm and i get a puff of dark, black i suppose, smoke.

In 4th and fifth gear when the engine is running at 2300 plus rpms that hesitation is there. As for top speed it has been significantly reduced, theres just no power left at the top end.

I changed my fuel filter and air filter since the problem began however the issue is still there.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Regards,

your IH8MUD buddy in kenya.

Sounds like an IP issue or at least fuel delivery-related...
Does it always hesitate at the same rpm?

fuel transfer pump?

Some Denso rotory IP have a small mesh screen under the fuel inlet banjo fitting. Not sure if This screen can become clogged. You have to unbolt the banjo fitting. Then with a dental pick reach in to pull out the screen. Clean it off and re-install.

Another consideration is your injectors. When were they last serviced. My truck had 129,000 kms on it when i got it an had exactly the same symptoms. The injector tips were really carboned up and worn. New injectors fixed my problems. About 100,000 kms is max for life of an injector.

if is your IP .. you can run a low press inline fuel pump .. just to help your factory IP sucking diesel from the tanks .. ( thought you are running freash diesel ) .. take a ride and see what happend ..

do you have a boost/egt gauge? that might clarify the issue(s).

dirty fuel? I know you changed the filter, but if the fuel is gunky, it'll still cause issues

or maybe you are getting air into a line somewhere, that will make odd things happen.

Do you notice any changes under different weather conditions (ie a hot day vs. a cooler one?).

Jsut did a road trip too, and found bad fuel had a major effect on power, espeacially at high altitudes, and mileage suffered too. Sometimes you hit a station that has crap fuel. I also had a seal from a bottle of additive floating around in my fuel tank, which was clogging the pick up.
