Sorry I got a little winded, I just finished a large coffee
No problemo, I think you speak for many of us long time Toyota owners.

First Toyota was back around '86, and I am on my 4th with the FJ.

I think to many are freaking out over stuff.

I agree 100% with Stinkyfinger. We prep and check all esentials before any trip into the wild. We have lots of backups and revovery with us. But in the end, driving the Toyota is the best piece of mind we have. Off roading has no guarantees and is inherently hard on any vehicle. I see more other brands broken in the road and on the off road than I see Toyotas. But I must say, most broken vehicles are because the owner took too big a risk or a bad judgement. Broken gears, cracked windshieds, tweaked body parts are all in the fun and pain of true off roading. The manufacturers can help save us from some pain and ourselves but to live life, go out and have fun, break some parts and make it better the next trip out :p

You guys don't seem to understand that some of us can't afford to be left without our vehicle while Toyota fixes their junk. That's why I am considering trading it in on an 08 FJ or a 2007 100 series Cruiser. I need to get rid of POTENTIAL problems before they happen. The transfer case on mine sticks in 4 Low often. I don't have time to be thinking of blown gears on the trail 500 miles from home. What if the gears blow and the wheels will not move? Front wheel drive aint gonna get you nowhere. Since Toyota has already stated that there were problems with the treatment of the earlier gearsets, why not recall all the earlier FJs and give those owners piece of mind? How about replacing the MT6 owners throw out bearing with a quality new one? How about replacing the faulty transfer case so you don't have to wonder if or when you're gonna get it back into 4 hi? To me, these are serious issues for a daily driver which I use on the trail as well.

You have 3 other vehicles in your sig line. Why are you so worried about being left without a vehicle
while FJC is being fixed?

Your paranoia and whining about these "potential' problems is quite amusing.

:crybaby:

No more paranoia... haha. I traded my FJC in on a 100 series today :steer:

My wife says wait 2-3 more years til all the bugs are worked out and get another. I think she's right haha.... oh yeah.

...

So, you traded a possible rear diff failure for a possible front diff failure, nicely done! :D

Hey Kevin, he did not say what year his 100 series is. Could be lucky and got a later model with the 4 spider front diff. later robbie

Says in the 100 Forum he got a 2004 with 32K miles. I also did a seach and there seems to be their fair share of recalls, common issues etc. on the 100's. Seems the $ loss on a newer truck would have been more than just getting a new set of gears. The dealer would replace the throw out bearing once it started to growl if that happened. I think he may have just wanted the 100 more than he wanted to FJ. In my case, you would have a big fight to take my FJ away. I will wish him well with his 100 !

True, but the later 4 spider units are also known to pop. I just find it ironic that with his hysteria for possible diff problems that he would trade for the other Toyota with well documented diff weakness.:D

:DHe had better add a ARB to the front of that 100

The front end of the 100 is less likely to explode than the rear of the FJ. Besides that, I am going to ARB the front and rear.

The FJ has potential problems I don't have time to deal with if they arise. I am on call 24/7 and have a lot of travelling so this is a better situation for me.

still would have been cheaper to change the ring and pinion. Takes less install time when you do the swap also.

Wasn't going to be cheaper, I know the dealership family. I got a great deal on the 100. I think it was only like $1,000 more than the FJC when all said and done.

For $1000 i could add a air locker to the front and change both gear sets. For $1200 I could pay someone to do it. It sounds like you have to do this on the 100 anyway, and the vehicle is 2 years older.

At least he still has a Toyota
I guess thats what really matters
Personally I can't ever see myself driving any SUV other then an FJC , even if it's has potential problems
I have a hard time justifying spending money to upgrade a part that's working fine, but if that part breaks
or is a potential problem then upgrading that part becomes a necessity.
I can't wait until I find out about more problems with the FJ :bounce::bounce:

I know of a couple of guys who have lunched the trans when the transmissions were completely submerged.

Covered under warranty.

Do that with your Wrangler.

Or you can do what I did and realize that EVERY manufacturer has some problems with the first year of a vehicle and lease one if you have to have the first one in your town. At least Toyota takes care of the problems.

Yea!!! I more whiner gone

Sorry about your loss, but happy one more "panic mode 10" "I hate it because it might break" whinners can post somewhere else. Can't afford a rental but can give up tax ttl and registration then the diff between trade in and what u paid?????? I'm tryin to be nice....but
Just don't make sense to me? I've been trying to break mine for about 6 months now, last week I had it hooked to a 39ft 26k lb motorhome that was stuck in my lawn (mud covered with green stuff) and I was sliding around like the mercedes suv on jurassic park right before the lizard ate him. About 75 seconds in 4lo elocked gas pedal on the floor and it pulled the rig out, ripped my driveway up and I was amazed but no broken gears, my welding on the front winch mount held too. Just gotta break it before the warranty runs out so I don't have to get all greasy, I hate gear oil.

I thought this thread was about things that actually broke, are you all playin fantasy four wheelin? let me get my staff and robe and your all in trouble.... Cuz I ain't broke anything good in the real world lately.

Please break this down for me.
Where on earth can you get an ARB and compressor and two gear sets for $1000?
And as a mechanic who has installed ARB's there is now way in hell I would do it for $200. And that's just the ARB. R&R two gears sets will cost PLENTY more than that!
