Tired of Toyota being wishy washy on whether or not they want to repair your defective R&P gears, transfer case, or any other defect which surfaces? Register your complaint with the government. Remember, the squeaky wheel always gets the grease. Factory defects should automatically generate a factory recall. Toyota is trying to avoid this. Let's give them something to think about. You spent your hard earned money for your new FJ, you deserve it to perform as advertised.

IVOQ - File a Complaint

They have it narrowed to a manufacture date. I'm not worried mine is a 2008 Model. :P

IT?

What's "it"?

Cracked windshields?
Blown Diffs?
Cracked/stuck x-fer cases?
Ripped engine bays?
Mis-aligned front ends?

Think they are referring to Rear Differential build dates up through Jan 2007 - Of course mine has Jan 07 built rear differential that still ok but I do have inner fender bulges plus paint & windshield were pitted/chipped before 1st car payment.:frown:

It is the supplied Differentials from a gear manufacturer that have failed.

the rest wasn't mentioned in the original post.

If you experienced what are becoming or are now common place problems with your earlier FJ, please do us all a favor and go fill out the forms at that link I provided. You will be doing all Toyota owners a service to which they will be grateful. Thanks.

x21!!

I've got an iffy diff AND bulges. DOUBLE jeapordy!

NHTSA & Toyota are notified in writing.

Waiting on the field rep in January to inspect.

18-k 10/06 build TRD - 1st Toyota, but LOVE the truck.

Seems like Toyota's quality isn't what it once was. That's the problem when a company gets TOO big. The tipping point is when corporate greed takes over and net profit overshadows a companies other priorities (like long term reputation...something the Japanese culture has always held in high esteem).

One new model with issues doesn't constitute priorities lacking, I do agree it takes longer for a decision but I belive one will be made on their own not forced.

My comment was meant to be a broader, more general comment that I believe is applicable to virtually any indistry. I don't really have the perspective to judge if there's been a general decline in Toyota quality, since this is my first one. I've owned many Hondas and many (relatively) unreliable European vehicles, but improper heat treatment of gears causing disintegration and the seperate issue of structural defects in the body are both major issues that can easily go undetected until well out of warranty.

I was simply agreeing whole heartedly with LandC4life on documenting these failures so Toyota has a handle on the depth of the issues (which I obviously have a personal interest in).

The Japanese drag their feet on everything. It's part of their culture. Read the Book of 5 Rings as applied to business and you'll see what I mean. For example, Japanese men meet with American business men to discuss a potential deal. The Japanese will never open the conversation. They like their opponents to spill their beans first, so they can take a more schrewd approach to the conversation.

In this case, the Japanese need to be told that they need to stand behind their product, and in a timely manner. Not whenever they feel like it.

Try and get a US manufacturer of anything to make a decision in approx. 1 year. Not going to happen.

By the time they are forced you will be out of warrenty anyway. Also a recall would not matter as far as milage goes.

ahhh..$HI**

i hope none of this stuff is wrong with my FJ my was manu in 06!

Yes I agree 100% about Toyota quality going downhill. I had/have issues with the lift bolts on my 2000 Celica GT-S, they issued a TSB, however they will not extend the warr, etc for a known problem. Toyota today is not the same as it was years ago!

Anything PRE-February 2007 from what I have heard. So guess what? Your FJ is in the danger zone. Welcome to paranoia......

I have an early fj, number 46xx or so. I am a little concerned each time I go to the woods. Has anyone had any luck getting Toyota to fix the rear ends before you get stranded??

Mike

I have been bitching about this forever. Fix it BEFORE a person is stranded. To wait til they are in possibly serious trouble, and let it break is stupid, that's STUPID, in capital letters. A time bomb, is what it amounts to.

You aren't even joking I am in Germany and I worry every time the wife takes it out that she might get stranded somewhere. Not to mention how long it will take to get it fixed here at the Toyota dealer here. (waiting on the parts) I am sure they are able to fix it just makes me nervous, the one time I went there they act like I brought GOD with me, everyone had to come outside to see the FJC, anyways I hope they make this a recall soon.

You need to keep in mind, Toyota has sold over 100,000 FJ cruisers and from what I've been reading on the forums only a hand full of people have broken the gears. You expect a company to spend millions of dollars to fix everyones FJ just because a few people had problems. If all the manufactures had this mentality we would be paying double the price for everything we buy.

Also from what I've been reading Toyota has been incredible with the stuff they are replacing under warranty. Usually once you lift or take a vehicle off road the dealership will void the warranty. I'm constantly reading about people 4 wheeling hard core stuff, breaking something and then having the dealership replace it no questions asked. Does hummer or jeep do this, No, Thats why a lot of people have traded in their other 4X4's for an FJ.

My only question about the gears failing is this only happening in the FJs with the Auto/part time 4 wheel drive(3.73 gears)
I don't remember reading any mt's with the all wheel drive and a different set of gears(3.93) having problems.
Is this problem isolated to the autos?

I know a lot of people are freaking out and assuming their rear end is going to explode because they've changed the diff fluid and saw how black it was.
But people with a 2005 or newer Tacoma's(which run the same axle, but I believe they run 4.10 gears) are also complaining about how dark their diff fluid was when they changed it, but again only a few have had breakage.

Toyota has become such a power house and the #2 auto maker because of their quality, yeah I agree is has slipped a little(which is understandable), but it is still better then any other company out their.
I've been buying Toyota's for the last 16 years and the FJ is my fifth and I have the same confidence in it just like the rest.
If your paranoid about it breaking in the woods don't wheel a lone.
Gears are easy and fairly cheap to replace if you have to pay for it yourself. If this was an engine breaking issue, then I would be more concern and worried.
Personally I never been a "sky is falling" type of person, I don't assume theirs a problem or worry about it until their is actually a problem, life's too short for that.

The only time I've been left stranded in a Toyota is when I've got it stuck in the woods, locked my keys in it and one time I ran out of gas. I never in 16 years had anything mechanical break on me on the road and off, thats why after the FJ my next vehicle will again be a Toyota.
Sorry I got a little winded, I just finished a large coffee
