Bought my first 80 last night. Guy here in Atlanta sold me his 1996 LX450 with 189k for $2500. It's been sitting for a couple of years. Had a lake in the bottom from clogged sunroof drains, the power steering pump groans and leaks, driver window won't go down, mirrors shake, front seats won't budge, etc. But it runs down the road good and seems pretty tight. Unfortunately, he couldn't find his records, but he was the second owner that bought it in 2008. Never off road according to him and his wife and not a lick of rust.

It's a gamble I guess, but what do y'all think? I've always wanted one and my impulsiveness won out last night, but is it a keeper or a dumper? decent deal or not?

You can pay $10k for a Land Cruiser and it will still have those issues! I would say its a smokin deal, it's a $8k-$9k truck all day long. The LX450 might be a little softer on the market because of the extra cladding and holes behind it. Im guessing no lockers?

Nah. I was hoping to get lucky but not so much.

Funny. The older gent was perplexed that so many people were offering him cash sight unseen. I was lucky the guy was holding it for me since I was "first"!

That is a killer deal. Enjoy your new ride.

Terrible deal.... If you want out of it I can help you out.... I have 3 piled up now already. Lol

$2500 and you still ask if it is a good deal???

Well in that case, NO! I'll help you get rid of. $2600 sound good for all your trouble?

Let me break it down to you this way.

Let's say it does not run.. Fine.
Part it out and you will double you're initial investment.

Do you still think it is a bad deal?
PM me in that case.

I only ask because there are layers upon layers of crap on Craigslist and I am the first to tell you that I've been bitten a few times by "too good to be true". I guess with the ailments that it suffers from, it's still a deal. Good. Gut was right this time!

It a great deal ! No go enjoy it and start spending some $, your wallet will thank you for the 'forced diet' later.

Once the 80 bites you, you will end up spending $10k in it easily. Upgrades after upgrades.

33" tires first.
Get a better suspension since it's old you say, but don't want to spend too much, so you end up with OME stock height and later some spacers.

35" tires next since you love her so much and she deserves it, besides it looks better and you should have done it initially.
Now it rubs.
Get a 2" lift and there will be a huge smile on your face.

Next you want a good set of aftermarket bumpers to look the part with those 35"s
Maybe sliders should be in the cars by next year to match the bumpers.

Now it sags.
You get a 3" lift and call it a day.

Your smile comes back and you now have wet dreams about your beautiful 80.

But one night you have a nightmare.
You got hung up on a big bolder and your pumpkin is badly scratched.
You wake up in a sweat and say to your self from the top of your lungs: 37"s is the cure!!!!!!

You start searching frantically for 37''s
People applaud your wise decision. You feel good.
You get them, but now they rub badly. You don't want to trim the body of course, because... look at her, she is beautiful.

So now you start searching madly for a 4" lift plus a 1" body lift. That's the ticket!
You discover it's not that simple. The entire axle geometry is out of wack.
DC shafts, control arms, steering stabilizer to control the insane vibration.

Now, just now, you look back at it how she was in the beginning. You realize... what a damn good deal I got when I purchased her.
She was so cheap in the beginning, but she got the better of you in the end.
Just like a girl you merry out of high school and keep on pouring money into her. Boob jobs, tummy tucks, earrings, dresses, shoes...

Yep. It's like that.

I'm just glad to hear it went to a soon-to-be avid enthusiast rather than a flipping flipper.

Nah. No flipping here.

Thanks for all the atta-boys. I feel good about it. I really have/had zero clue about the 80 series market, but this help confirms my suspicions. It'll be fun and I'm ready to bust knuckles to get it back in shape.

Just from a quick poking around, are the head gaskets really that big of an issue or blown out of proportion?

It's never been an issue with the LS3 6.2 swap.

Lots of people with lots of miles on original head gaskets. I'm at 267k miles with original HG.

The original HG material wasn't the best. The new stock replacement is a different design. If you have to ever do a HG then you probably never have to worry about it again.

Or Swap in an LS.

I'd swing by your local Lowe's and hit the lumber department and start knocking!

To the OP, good score. I won't own a LX because I don't like the look of the cladding. But that's still a good deal.

What a lie!!!

You don't have the right color panties to drive a LX.

Since someone mentioned upgrades/mods, I went with bumpers first (slee, front and rear) because in my neck o' the woods I bump into stuff a lot. Snow berms in particular, snow stakes, trees, bushes, etc. My original front bumper got trashed because of it, even bent some of the paneling a bit.

When I lived in the city, that was a non-issue. I'd drive your truck a bit and see where you could actually use whatever mods first. I have a 3" lift with 275 tires; it looks a little weird but I'm not up for re-gearing and dropping $1300 on tires for the improvement. You can do things in pieces.

LMAO!!! Where the hell were you before I bought my 80?? You described exactly what happened to me. I just installed the 4" Slee lift and just got new shoes for her. Lots and lots of money later and Im still having fun :hillbilly:

Start the loooooooong list of pm. Please use oem parts. Onur just ledt atlanta. But use him or Sam at atlanta south Toyota with his mud discount. Start the masive pm program and do the ENTIRE coolant system with oem parts and your HG might just last another 200,000.

The original hg is not as good as a newer oem one. But most fail due to 20 year old coolant systems stressing them from high temps. There is lots of good suport in atl. Dont mess around with crappy shops. Do it yourself with oem parts or poney up and let acc do the deal.

These trucks are not. Cheap to own. Trying to save money and cutting corners will just couse head aches and cost more in the long run.
