@Abigail and I are putting on a new years eve run.

Date: December 31st

Location: Sunflower Mine (difficult)

Meeting Spot: 9am Chevron on beeline or at trail at 10am.

Vehicle Requirements: High clearance, Atrac or lockers, Rock sliders (recommended), Would not recommend bringing stock truck, body damage likely with out proper protection. @Abigail both drive 100 and both used our rock sliders twice on the trail. If the vehicle is lacking protection there is one section that will require rock stacking. Pin striping is definite it is a tight trail in some spots.

How do you think the FJ40 would do on the trail?
no sliders....

I think you would be fine with short wheel base. Do you have a locker?

Whole loop.

Is this a trip to the mine and back, or the whole loop?

This is the loop. We will probably make a pitstop at the mine, though; we never explored that on our original run.

For those unfamiliar with the trail, this will be an easy day trip for anyone in the Phoenix area, the trail starts about 30 miles north up the Beeline HWY towards Payson (turn off at Mt. Ord). :steer:

Here's some pics of one of our more recent trips through this route. There are some rock gardens to traverse. There are some tight spots. Station wagons are at risk of damage, mostly to the lower body, short wheel base vehicles fared better. Care and patience are required for any chance to escape unscathed (both of which I keep forgetting to pack on this trail!) but it is possible. The scenery is awesome, the wheeling is technical in spots, it's one of my personal favorites.
This thread has a few more pics from another trip earlier in the year, as does this one, with more scenery added! Here's some from last year, before some of the repairs were done.

Although it's traditionally run clockwise, it's a bit easier counter-clockwise as most of it is downhill, especially the rocky bits.

We've done a ton of work to this trail to keep it open, as erosion has threatened it in several places. Hope you enjoy it! I have a run on my calendar for the day before, but maybe I can push my hall pass to two days...

Thanks for your response and links. I’m going to pm you in a little. I have a couple questions!

Dang, I have 9.4 inches of clearance at the rear diff, I really want to try this but some of those big rocks might catch the rear bumper. I should have sliders on by then. I have a rear locker. Do you think a Tacoma could make that? Worst case the trail might make me replace my bumper with a high clearance rear :)

You will probably be fine. I will report back on the 23rd I’ve ran it once and really did not have any issues.

We’d be driving the 100 series to tow so I think we are out for this run. Have fun ya’ll looks like a challenge!
