I drove my stock '96 LC down from Oregon last week and somewhere north of the Grapevine it seemed to have blown a shock (front driver's side). While it was still drivable if you hit a bump too hard it would toss the truck off balance and you would get an enormous amount of body articulation (death roll).

When I got to town, I had the suspension inspected and it was cleared with no issue, though the shock did seem to be blown. Four new shocks and $500 later I still have the lateral instability meaning that if a bump or a hard right turn causes the truck to roll to the left it begins bouncing.

I am looking for anyone who may have had this problem before, any ideas on what it could be as well as a Land Cruiser mechanic in San Diego that I can trust. I have had some bad experiences recently and thought I would reach out on the Forum and see if anyone had any independent referrals they can make.

Thank you.

Johnny,
Post this in the 80s section of Tech and you will surely get more responses from the "collective" here on MUD.

I had a "sudden" amount of death roll hit me on a wheeling trip one time. It was one of my rear panhard bolts that loosened and fell out. Found it a hundred yards back on the trail.

SD Trux in the Miramar / Mira Mesa area are the resident Land Cruiser experts. Have only heard good things about their work.

sounds like something is not in place, I don't work on cruisers anymore for $, but happy to take a look at it if you want to swing it by my garage, I am in carlsbad, at least that way you will know what it is when you go to get it repaired.

Noah

Noah definately knows his way around a Cruiser, so I would definitely take him up on his generous offer.

Good luck.

Update: Issue Resolved

I know it has been a while, but I forgot to close out this thread and thank you Noah for taking the time to meet me, drive the truck and trouble shoot the issue. With new shocks and an alignment, the problem seems to be resolved.

As we discussed, replacing the stock springs may be a good idea in the future, but for now it seems to be working just fine.

Thanks again.
