Dead Starter???

So I went out last night to run out in the 40 and nothing. I haven't investigated yet but I think it is either the starter or the alternator. I was hoping to gut some UC's opinions on the "mean green starter and alternators" worth the money? WOuld you go another way? Thanks in advance for the advice!! Brian

Get an FJ60 unit or go Delco if you want an alt. upgrade. Go ahead and get a new starter if it is acting up. The new units are all gear reduction and the best starter you can get.

You can just get a starter for an FJ60 from any of the chain auto parts stores. Those are the gear-reduction ones that Belmont148 is talking about. They bolt right in, but you'll have to make a minor change to your electrical connections. I think I just had to lengthen one of the wires when I swaped one into my '71. You can get one for a little over $100 with a lifetime warranty.
***BUT BEFORE YOU SPEND ANY MONEY***
You can have most of the parts stores test your alternator and starter for free. Most of them can test the parts on the vehicle, but the bench tests they have are pretty fool proof, so if you get iffy results from the 'on vehicle' test, you can always pull the parts and have them bench tested inside.

check your wires

be sure to check the connections at the starter. seems basic and you may have already, i had a similar situation few years back. turned out one of the connections was loose

If I was gonna go through the trouble of removing an old 2f starter I wouldn't even bother reinstalling it or checking it out. I'd be buying a gear deduction and installing it. Hands down a better product. You stall a motor in a place you don't need to be stalled in and cannot get you motor to start that reduction starter will get you out of harms way. It's an amazing piece of equipment.

I bought (actually the bought me) a gear reduction starter yesterday @ Advance for $89.99 w/ a core and a limited lifetime warranty. I pick it up today.

X2....I love to stop on an incline cut the engine. Restart without using the clutch. Very cool.
It's hell on a clutch to restart on an incline. And clutch burning stinks like rotten eggs.

When I lived in charlotte, I was down near south blvd and my clutch master blew...made it home by starting in second gear and tuning it off when I would come to a redlight...probably not the safest thing to do.

Just got back in to town. I had the battery hooked up all night to a charger and she started up. I guess the battery was that dead. Brand new red top need to figure out how it got that dead.
