Had a serious issue today and I don't know where to start with a repair...
Here goes:
1. Battery light came on and I drove for 2 days with it on.
2. Went on vacation and it sat for 1 week.
3. Returned from vacation and it started, but starter power was a little weak.
4. Drove it for 2 minutes and it lost all power. (No engine, no electrical, just completely dead)
5. Jumped it off and it started, but it lost all power in about 15 seconds (No engine, no electrical, completely dead).
6. And now it sits...

Side note: new Interstate battery last month.

Any advice on where I should begin would be much appreciated. I've searched the forum and haven't been able to narrow this particular issue down.

Yeah it sounds like something in your charging circuit has failed, so your battery slowly got weaker and is now totally flat. Most likely the alternator like Trapper mentioned above but also possible that you have a bad ground, connection, or something else electrical happening. Start simple and make sure your battery connections are clean and tight, and check your chassis grounds for the same ( one on the fender near battery , one on engine block driver side, and another in the rear if I remember right )

Do you want to diagnose and fix this yourself? Do you have a multimeter for checking voltage, even a cheap one like this will do .

You will need to charge your battery ( or jump start it again ) Then check battery voltage. With the engine running the battery should show over 14V if the alternator is charging...If voltage is not over 14 then you will want to diagnose the problem further,...Start there and then report back

>> Assuming you battery does not show a charge voltage when running, your next step will be to put the multimeter on the battery positive post on the alternator...If this does not show a charge voltage either, then that's how you now its your alternator......If for some reason the alternator is putting out 14+ volts but your battery is not showing the same, then your problem is somewhere in-between the alternator and battery

The battery indicator on the gauge cluster means that there is a problem with the charging system. That would explain the trouble starting etc.

Likely the alternator.

If it's the original Toyota alternator you may just need a set of brushes. My 93 truck's alternator quit at 270k so I took it apart and found out everything is good and the brushes was just worn out I picked up some at Toyota for maybe $30. You said you just had your battery replaced, was it just old or was it shorted?

If your dealer accepts returns, buy a brush set along with a reman alternator. Once you get the old one out, it only takes a couple mins to take it apart to see if you just need brushes.

Charge that battery up while you are replacing the alternator. Don't need to let a brand new alternator suffer through putting a good charge back on your dead battery.

I have a shop in Herndon, it sounds like your alternator has failed. If you charge your battery fully you can drive it for at least 15-20 minutes. It's not an expensive fix. Let me know if you need help, but towing is safer you don't want to die in the middle of route 50

A word of thanks to all for the assistance; except for the hater that beat me up for my slow response to a battery warning light. Sometimes life gets in the way...
Charged the battery and put in a reman denso alternator. All seems well for now. System is showing good charging and seems to be running fine.

Thanks for the advice and recommendation brother. I appreciate it. I put in a new alternator and all seems fine. You are correct about rte 50...nuts. I live in middleburg and go that way from time to time. this area is getting out of control.

Well he has "Mopar" in his user ID so I wouldn't take any offense to it lol poor guy likes Chrysler's

Awesome, glad to hear you got it worked out. Fingers crossed that solved the problem.

Hey, I resemble that remark...I know it's sort of cheezy but I totally want a Scat Pack Widebody Challenger as a mid-life-crisis-mobile.
And yes I've heard that "392" also stands for the typical Scat Pack owner's credit score.
I also wouldn't turn my nose up at a '71/'72 Road Runner.

Mark me down for "glad it appears to have been the problem and is now solved" as well.

100% I do ... pre '72 Mopar and I'm all in. But I also own a bunch of toyotas so there's that too....and I have a big toyota customer base, I kinda know a thing or 2 😉

Wasn't beating you up, just somethings should be be ignored.... like battery lights and low fuel warnings!

lol fair enough, I was just being a jerk for the hell of it..

The guy I bought my old Camry from had a garage full of old american muscle cars that admittedly I don't know anything about, but I did admire them all for sure.... In the mix was a bright orange roadrunner thing with the huge spoiler, think he called it a super bird? It was impressive
