Question for those who have resisted the siren song of big-block engine swaps...those noble and hardy souls who feel a 2F is plenty of power and who really needs to hit highway speeds going up steep grades at altitude anyway?....

Anyway, there's a question in here somewhere....

I got the old girl all desmogged and put in a K&N and the new Trollhole carb. She's running pretty good and getting about 14 mpg on mixed driving but I'm pretty sure I don't have the timing right. I have the book that gives a value for timing for the stock setup but I know all the smog stuff advanced/retarded the spark to pass emissions.

Does anyone know what it should be now? I've done the redneck timing adjust (twist until you start hearing ugly & then back it off a bit) but that takes the dizzy all the way to the stop. Do I want to pull it off and advance it a tooth on the gear? Should I leave it alone and enjoy?

On another note, I should hit 250,000 on the clock this weekend--is there some kind of ceremony to be performed? Do I get out and piss on the tires? Pour a 5th of Jack into the gas tank? Drive naked thru town? I can't let the moment pass by without note.

Do you have the ability to keep the HAC (High Altitude Compesation) system in tact? If so I would go that way and leave the timing stock. Otherwise you may need to change the jets in the carb for the altitude.

Mark--the HAC went with the desmog stuff. Wasn't working anyway! Already jetted for altitude. I also seem to have messed up the carb fan circuit.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing!

What I've always heard is advance the timing, drive it up a steep hill, and if it doesn't ping then advance it more until it does, then back it off.

It does sound like you will need to jump a tooth on the distributor.

All of this is coming from a guy who could never tune is 2F properly, so take it with a grain of salt.

put the air rail back on, with a smog pump and egr! with out this she will run lean all the time, and your temps will be around 200-210. In the summer it will diesel every time you shut it off

timing wise you can run 2-3* more with that set up,

11-13 * is what I run with that set up, other wise 8* ish

That is what I have learned over the years with my modded 2f!

I'm pretty sure that at 250,000 you bring the vehicle and title to the 4x4 club meeting you are a member of and sign the thing over to the vice president.

P.S I will be at the meeting to celebrate with you and receive the keys, cheers....:grinpimp:

You need to put the sensor back on or it won't engage when it gets to a certain temp. I made a small bracket for mine and put it under the carb facing the exhaust manifold, it works fine.

Dizzy is the original 1983 vintage--I've pushed it up to the stop and definitely saw an inprovement in HP/torque. Very slight knock when under full load. Going to try a tank of 91 octane to see if that gets rid of the knock. Might already be where I need to be.

Rui--are you bringing your rig tonight? Might take a look at what you've done for the blower if you don't mind.

Yep, Ill be there....your welcome to look...
