Or maybe it's called the dust shield???

Is it Ok to run without out it completely? I am upgrading to the 4 runner calipers and it needs to get trimmed and I was looking at it and would just like to remove it all together.

It has a cooling "scoop" that packs the mud and rocks between it and the rotor and is a PITA to clean.

Any thoughts?

Old wisdom: Keep it. It keeps the rotors cool.
New wisdom: Discard it. It's cooling effects are minimal.

I run my 84 FJ60 without the disc brake dust shields.
Works fine....just reconfigure the brake line.
