A wasted trip to the Toyota dealer that sold my truck to me has lead me to post..

My daylight running lights blew out a 10amp fuse..

The person that wired them cut into one of my headlight wires and spliced in a wire from there to that little square connection box under the hood. (left side motor compartment looking from front of vehicle) and connected them to the centre connection screw..
The fuse was blowen hense no daylight running lights.
This applies full voltage to my headlights as soon as the key is turned on. I replaced this fuse and daylight running lights are back.

Question------ Can this be right???

I thought that daylight running lights were supposed to be hooked up through a relay of some sort..

Question ----If the way they are connected is incorrect what should be done to correct it..
Question ----Where to find electrical diagrams for the LJ78 Prado??

Still Looking For Info

I checked the other threads on this topic none of which cover this..:frown:

Anyone, anyone at all have info??:D

Richard:

If I had and LJ I'd try and help you out...unfortunately I don't and I don't know much about them.

If I were to use the headlights as DTR, I would use a separate relay and tap into the coil wire of the headlight relay to activate the headlights with the key in the ON position. If you have a manual, find out what side of the headlight relay coil is controlled by the switch to find out which side of it you need to tap into (- or +).

Thanks Stone.
Not knowing much about the wiring in this rig will probably make this an experience..

Richard,

What I did was installed a Canadian Tire daytime headlight module. It's $25 and is easily installed. Works like a dream. You then never touch the headlight switch. The lights work as normal although with full voltage to the lights. Some people don't like this because of the resulting shorter life of the bulbs being on at full power all the time but I don't worry about that. Being as visible as possible is the main thing.

I have not found any module yet..??

Only a wire from that small square covered power outlet under the hood
to one of the head lights.. I assume the head light module is a small square black thing with wires but have yet to locate it..

When the fuse gose the head lights function normally from the headlight switch
BUT if you forget to turn them off there is no alarm to remind you they are on..
untill you replace the blown fuse in the power outlet.

So recap - when the fuse gose (10amp) the daylight running headlights are out.
The headlight warning alarm dose not work. Whats the head light modul look like and where is it generally located..

Daytime headlights -- Prado

Richard,

I'm not sure what you have installed. The Can Tire unit is about 6 X 5 cm and is wired as follows...... (5 wires)

1) gnd
2) batt +
3) oil press switch or source thats hot only with ign in run position (not in start or acc.)
4) running/marker light +
5) headlight common (+ thats hot in high and low beam)

you might want to start over with the above set up. It's easy to put in.

there are better units avail that run the lights at reduced voltage like a stock sys but are about $100.

good luck

Thanks Kieth, for your info.
The system in my truck has yet to be found.. So I'm not sure what's in it.
If I could locate what was put in. I would have a better understanding of what they did. (canadian tire) and probably have a better understanding of how to correct it. So far as above all I can find is this wire spliced into the drivers side light then it gose to the small black covered power outlet box centre connector.
I must add It has not blown any more fuses yet.

ANYone else end up with their daytime drive lights set up like this from canadian tire?? Were you able to locate any thing else they did and undo it???
