I'm thinking of doing a family day trip to this historical place and the general public is allowed to enter the gates unescorted twice a year. The next one is on Sat, 4/3/10. If you miss this one, you'll get another chance in October.

I'm thinking of having lunch on the base somewhere so bring your food and chairs. Hopefully the weather will be cooperative.

Let me know if there is any interest.

We did it first year we lived here. Very sort of surreal, but worth doing once. If you go in the northern route through the Stallion Gate off US380 watch your speed as it's a notorious speed trap.

Thanks for the heads up Greg; yup, we'll go through the Stallion gate.

agreed greg. i took a tour there for work once... it was pretty cool. haven't been back for a few years.

I'm in if I'm not teaching

I went on a geology field trip there some years ago and enjoyed it. Trails relatively easy IIRC, mostly just dirt roads, one rocky climb up to an historic cabin.

This sounds like a fun day trip.

How about a headcount?

I was thinking of meeting up somewhere on I-25, if that's agreeable to everyone. If I recall correctly, there's a gas station near a casino on I-25, just south of the airport. I don't recall the name of the gas station but it is located on the West side of I-25 and easily visible. We've used that location as a meeting place when heading south previously.

How about we meet there about 9am and depart by 9:30 on Sat? I don't know who all is going to show up, probably nobody but we'll be there.

I'll try to hook up the ham/cb before leaving the house. We'll be bringing food, chairs and the dog with us. Hopefully it'll be decent weather.

We can't make it, but the gas station you're referring to is one exit down from the casino exit - I think it's exit 214 but I could be off by one. It's on the west side of the river as well.

Edit: It's exit 213.

I can't make it this weekend, but have fun! It should be interesting. Some history that's unique to NM...

Exit 213, gotcha.

I think you guys are referring to the Isleta Exit. It is a Chevron on your right side. I wish I could go, but need to help a friend with a sprinkler system.

I am planning to be there.

It was a good day indeed. The family enjoyed the outing and thanks for coming out y'all.

After checking out exit #213, I have to say, #215 is much better. From now, we'll use #215 as a meeting spot when heading southbound on I-25.
