Mechanic failed me for safety inspection saying the Brake light had to be on, when key is at “ON” position. And brake is not engaged, like with the check engine light. The check engine light turns off once the car is started.

Brake light turns on with the parking brake engaged, and off when parking brake is disengaged.

Wondering if something actually is wrong, or this is how it works.

In the image, brake was disengaged.

Also ABS light stays on when car is on, probably something wrong with the ABS system.

Find a new mechanic. That's 100% incorrect. The only 2 things that illuminate the BRAKE dash lamp are the float in the reservoir cap and the hand brake switch.
