Ok I've had this darn thing in and out 3 times now and the truck hasn't even been driven. I replaced the pilot bearing while the motor was still out of the truck. I initially put the trans in while the motor was out and like a fool forgot the clutch fork. Oops. So I had to pull the trans after installing the motor. Got it up and realized that the throwout bearing wasn't in. Damn. Yeah I know live and learn. Anyhow this is the third time that I'm trying to get everything back together and the splines lined up almost immediately but the darn thing won't go in the last 3/4 of an inch. What in the world is the problem now. I really don't want to pull this thing back down we all know how much fun it is. BTW it's a 3 speed w/ t-case installed. Thanks again ahead of time guys.

Sounds like you're not getting the shaft into the pilot bearing. Didja use a clutch alignment tool? Didja knock the clutch disk out of position somehow?

Try having someone push the clutch pedal in while you wiggle the transmission.

Did you see if the pilot would fit on the very end of the input shaft on the tranny?

Hey guys. I know the pilot bearing will go over the end of the trans shaft I've had this trans in two previous times. We've tried the clutch wiggle but still nothing. I kinda feel like it has something to do with the pilot bearing but hate the idea of pulling it all the way out to see if there is damage to the pilot bearing. I did use the alignment tool it was all nice and lined up slid right into the clutch plate and and I'm assuming it has made it into the flywheel but the only thing I can think of is it's somehow hitting on the pilot bearing. I did check the pilot bearing before starting everything and it felt like it was smooth and right on.

an easy way to help avoid the whole lining up the pilot bearing and not knocking off the throwout bearing is to buy a piece of the proper size readyrod cut it into 4 pieces and thread them into the back of the block where the tranny to bellhousing bolts would go, slip the tranny up and slide it forward AFTER you use an alignment tool on the clutch..

This works, but the clutch has to be properly adjusted and functional to release its grip on the clutch disk to allow the nose of the input shaft to slide into the pilot bearing.

good idea

that's the next corse of action. Anyone know the right size of ready rod?

Dunno about "ready rod", I just bought 2 longer bolts, like 4" and cut the heads off the bolts and put a slot in the cut-off end. Used those as guides to align the T/TC then when seated, put in the normal length tranny bolts in the two empty holes, removed my guides and replaced them with the normal tranny bolts.

Voila! Or as we say here on Mud...............Waa-Laa;)

The "rods" are a distraction from the problem, but they will let you hang the tranny there while you figure out how to get the nose of the tranny in the pilot bearing. The problem is that the clutch disk is not properly centered with respect to the pilot bearing. The little plastic centering tools don't do that good of a job unless you are really paying attention.

Either recenter the disk or have someone step on the clutch pedal (with the clutch functioning) to get it that last 3/4 of an inch.

thanks guys don't have the time to do it till probably next weekend but I will re visit this link then will likely have my computer with me just in case things go haywire. thanks again for the info.
