For those of us that are mathmatically challenged, how do you do the calcs to figure out which set of gears will bring you close to accurate?

That's a current list. I think most of those are available, and what works together.

More teeth in the driven gear for a smaller tire. Less teeth for a larger tire.

I have a 33403-60030 (16 tooth) driven gear (from CDan) and matched it with a 33481-60030 6x17 drive gear (what came in my 3 speed transfer case--has a new number now). Right on for my 33 inch tires. Looks like there's a 15 tooth driven that might go up a step!

Outstanding, thanks for the help. I need to get with Cdan for my gear change. The change is a simple in the driveway swap? I don't need to pull the 5 bolt assembly behind the pbrake off, correct?

It can be a challenge getting the speedo sleeve out of the speedo housing, (crowbar) but I've done it several times. You sometimes need the crowbar whether or not you do it under the truck....:frown:

No, it was done without taking the brake off, It was all easy except getting your fingers in there when putting the little retainer bolt and tab back in.

So all I gotta do is remove the retaining bolt, and pull the cylinder with the speedo gear on it out?

I'm thinking that using the end cap from an old speedo cable, I could conjure up an attachment for my slaphammer. Yoink, and it's out.

That's it, one bolt and it's in your hand... Here are some pics to enjoy...

First pic shows the cylinder that slides out when you remove the bolt. I used and old speedo cable to yank it out.

Second shows the speedo gear size stamped on the end of the gear.

Third shows the inner O-Ring that seals the gear shaft. One that's worn is a common cause of gear oil migrating up the cable and gumming up the speedo gears. You should also make sure ALL the parts are in the end of the cable!

I'm kind of confused, '78 BJ40 AUS, with H41 tranny My gear is stripped and I need to replace it, looking at the chart from above the only thing supposed to be in the 78 bj40 is the 6x18, I pulled a 6x15 out of it. Anyone know why this would be? I'm going to order a new one and didn't want to order the wrong one especially if there is a reason for the 6x15 Thanks for your help!

P.S. no lift, 31x10.5 15 tires
