Newbie question here. Not really a newbie to MUD or wrenching, but my 40 I used to have came with a V8, so not too familiar with the 2F yet, so looking for some advice here, I'm probably missing something easy.

I'm trying to remove my cylinder head from my '79 2F, have all the bolts out, rocker assy removed, and I have the seal from the gasket broken, but it's not coming off, I seem to have resistance on the PS.

Do I need to remove that cover on the passenger side of the block and get to something else I'm not seeing?

Thanks Much

Some of them are real stubborn, i have had to use some prettty long cheater bars to break some of them loose. But before you go that route make SURE you have all the bolts out! I am sure someone here will chime in and tell you how many there are, I would but i am not at the shop right now.

did you remove the center bolt underneath the rocker assembly?

That's the most common issue.

I've had to use a putty knife to get the HG to let go as well.

Yeah, I did get that oddball one out from under the rockers, and the rockers and pushrods are removed.

I can't find it now, but I have seen a pic of a 2F with head removed, and there's some sort of line coming up out of the block...Probably oil line?

I don't see this anywhere with the head still on, but wondering if that is holding me up..

Head is loose, can lift it slightly from Drivers side, but Pass side seems like something is holding it, but not tight like a head bolt..

Any body know what I'm talking about?

The line I'm talking about is shown here on the second pic, first post. Where does this attach, come out when the head is still on. This looks long enough to be sticking out of the head, but I don't see it..

That's the 1F oil line. Not part of 2F.

Aha, thanks. So I'm not going crazy (well, maybe a little).

Looks like I just need to apply the "bigger hammer" methodology often needed while working on older rigs.

Thanks for the input guys. I think my head gasket is just extra "sticky" on the passenger side. I'll just get a bigger pry bar and see what happens.

Idave, just saw you are from McCall...That's where I found my 55, in a field on Market road I think?

You drive a 40? I see a nice 55 up there by the airport when I go through...that yours?

I have a green 40 and a green 45 lpb pickup. Your 55 lived about a half mile from my house!! The airport 55 has been there for many many years. I don't know who owns it.

Small world I guess. Thanks for the advice, and I'll keep an eye out for your cruisers when I come through...

FYI - the first time I removed my cylinder head I had to put a 4' prybar in the exhaust port, stand underneath it and lift with my legs. The entire LC rocked to one side before the cylinder head finally came loose - nothing holding it on but a manky old gasket and serious carbon deposits.

Before it let go I was terrified I was going to break something Important and Expensive, fortunately all ended well. But it was a testament to the fact that sometimes you just need to wrench harder.
