CV replacement difficulty vs bird job on an 80

Hi all,

My 100 needs new CV joints. For those that have done the knuckle job on an 80, how would you rate the difficulty of the CV job vs that job (which I have done), including length of job? I'd like to do new bearings, races, drive flange, rotors etc while I'm in there too.

Easier than an 80. Pro tip: don't use non OEM shafts on the 100. Just don't unless you want to do the job twice. They don't have the rzeppa design 6 ball cage found in the OEM ones.

New shafts $400 each or reboot @ $100 each.
 
IMO, I think 100 series CVs are easier. Undo calipers, c clips, hub gears, and ball joints, and the sucker gets hammered out.I recall straight axle birfs taking me longer and I always ended up dirtier.

Thanks, definitely planning to use OEM shafts. My time is precious and I don't want to do this job twice or thrice!
 
If you have everything on-hand ready to go it’s 1/2 day job on the driveway. Easy stuff.

I'm running cheap aftermarket CVs, as I pulled my OEM in plans of rebooting.. been daily driving and wheeling these for over a year now not a single problem. My OEMs were sloppy, and thus a reboot kit wouldn't have solved my problems. Part numbers were CARDONE 665185HD , and were $62/each when I bought them, and they have a lifetime warranty 😂
 
Just looking at the disassembly videos I can tell that this is a much easier and cleaner job than doing the knuckles on a 60/80. Might as well buy the huge Costco pack of towels for the 60/80 job as you are going to need the entire thing. CV Axle job looks like a cake walk comparatively... LOL

Really hope that I never have to do it but have this odd gut feeling it is in my future.
 
100 series CVs are easier and quicker to do than 80 series knuckles or birf rebuilds.

No need to remove rotor and bearings. It is easier and less greasy compare to 80 knuckle job.
 
Depending on mileage, I would also recommend changing out the hub flange while doing this job. It is about a $50 part and it will make a big difference in closing some of the tolerances that may have opened up with the miles.

Edit- I missed that you were replacing the bearings and the flange in your first post. You will definitely be happy with the result. If you need a video of how to preload the wheel bearing, this is 2001LC's video.

Especially if he is doing both sides, it might be a good opportunity to repack the bearings though.
