CV Boots on a 2002 VW Passat wagon

Has anybody here done the cv boots on a 2002 passat? I was just changing my oil and noticed that one was ripped open pretty bad and the other was on its way. Thanks for any and all help,

It is just one of those things that isn't worth fiddling with. Get a rebuilt CV shaft with new boots for $70-100 each and go another 75,000 miles.

thanks!! Yeah, it looks like its two new front axles. My mechanic said he would put new ones in for about $350 total. Since I dont have much time to mess up the front end of my wifes car :rolleyes: i figured its worth a little extra to have a pro do it for me.

Agreed, heard nothing but great things about raxles.com, I think they even sometimes ship with hard to find bits you need for the job and then you send them back.

Never replace the boots. Not worth the effort. Change the whole shaft.

I have seen a number of relatively new VWs coming in needing cv shafts because of ripped boots.

Why replace the whole thing when a high-quality boot kit can be had for $15 a side? I actually just did one side on mine last night on our 99' A6 Avant, it was EASY compared to doing the birfs on the Cruiser. I had the CV joint separated (without removing the whole shaft) in 15 minutes. The CV joints seemed good on mine, so a clean and repack was all that was needed. I do agree though, if you have the cash and don't want to bother, a whole replacement shaft is an easy way to go. I kinda wanted to dig in and see if I could get more life out of the joints ...... if it doesn't work out, I'll go the replacement route.

yes they will send along the required bit- i think it was a 12 pt bit. a pocket knife, gloves, rags, and new joints/boots packed w/ amsoil grease. as well as a prepaid box for the old one.

why not just the boot? labor. it's not a birf job but it is still messy and takes time, and not even a guarantee that you are done after the process (if the joint needs replacing anyway, for example)

It was cheaper for a full axle rather than my time. Install is so easy, it is more hassle to rotate tires than change the axle.

also, I hear Empi also sells axles cheap.
 
thanks for the input. i went ahead and had my mechanic do it for me. I probably could have done it myself but it was worth it to see the peaceful look my wifes gave me when I suggested that we have our mechanic do it. It turned out great and now I have a little more time to tear into the cruiser and try to get to some of the more tedious and messy PM stuff done:D, like PHH, axle greasing etc.
