A while back during the sierra Toyota parts 25% off sale I bought a pair of spare CV axles. They were delivered, but the dust covers were dented and damaged during shipment. I sent them back and they were willing to replace the axles. They just sent me an email saying the replacement axles have the same type of damage and they just don’t think they can ship me these parts without damage. They would be willing to refund my money and suggested I just buy the parts locally. I can do that of course, but I’m not getting the 25% off. I’m wondering if they could sell me the spare dust covers and seals and then I could just replace the damaged ones with the new axles that would be cheaper than full price locally, but I’d have to do the work and I’m not sure what all that entails or how hard it would be. Thoughts?

I have reused my dust covers or bent the damaged ones back. Go RCV if your ride height is increased.

I've seen this damage before on CVs from Toyota. I just bent the dust covers back close to straight. There's nothing that fits super tight to the dust cover so a little wobble there is no big deal.

Here’s what the ones I sent back look like. Do you think I can just bend them back with a pliers good enough?

Mine was dented but not nearly as bad. I think mine can easily be bent back with pliers. That said they can send you the metal dust ring separately if you can figure out how to install it without the SST, just ask. You can try to bend them back but yours look pretty bad

Where are you finding reference to the SST? Is there a replacement procedure in the FSM?

Edit: answering my own question:

If they didn't damage the rubber seal, you could straighten them acceptably, although admittedly those are worse than the ones I have gotten. I used a small pair of pliers to pry out the dents, then a small hammer to tap down the high spots.

Mine didn't look nearly that bad.

You paid for a new OEM, factory service replacement part. Not a damaged one.

It is on the supplier to make it right. It's their fault they did not either check the part when it came from Toyota to them or that they improperly packaged it for shipping. That's the way being a good service/widget supplier works.

I would absolutely take this up the food chain.... if it was a $1 part or a $100000000 part.

Agreed. They said they will refund my money because they don’t think these parts can be shipped w/out damage. They ordered two more from Toyota and they were damaged in the same way. Hard to go further with them when they are willing to take the parts back and give total refund.

I decided to punt and get my money refunded. Serra was good about that. My local price is $100 more per axle. A new dust cover is $30 but I have to remove and install the new one which would need a press and SST or homebrew SST and also come with the risk if damaging the seal which would then also need to be replaced. I just decided to not jack with all that to save a small amount of money.

I imaging that the local ones will still have a good chance of some damage but I'll be able to see what I'm getting before I pay and decide if its minor enough to just bend back. A little bit of bent cover isn't a big deal.

Much better than the Serra CVs but not perfect. The dust covers don’t need to be perfect. I don’t think I’ll even try to bend this back.

Looks almost identical to mine I got from Olathe late week.

Seems not that big of a deal, but yes, frustrating
