:hhmm:OK ,some years ago I did the cut and turn on my front axel and was dissatified with my results . I had the death wobble . so to some what fix the problem i replace. the two leaf springs that i took out with the advice of ALCAN SPRINGS and shim the axel. now i want to fix it "Right" .I bought new spring perches from RuffStuff.Spoke to DAVE ,was very helpful ,And DAVE if you read this thanks again .I will also be adding a axel truss to both axels and flipping my rear springs to gain more wheel base. I am already SO. My aproach is to set the angle of the diff. to the transfer case ,run a string line, then tack the my perches.then cut and turn the knuckle to 4' to 6' degrees ,i am running 35'.What angle Should I set it .And I am doing this on the truck. I also need to say This is a 69'FJ40. If any one has any input please fell free to Add .Thanks Dennis

I am at 5 deg but many run 3 deg without issue.

3 degrees caster should be enough. There are downsides to having too much caster. Besides increased steering effort, you reduce the size of the contact patch of the tire with the road in turns, which can be dangerous on slick roads at high speed and you will increase the wear on the oustide edges of the tires.

Lots of things cause DW, so don't expect a C&T to necessarily fix it if you haven't ruled out all the other causes. Basically, any flexibility, slop or play in any component that locates the wheel is a potential cause.

Pin head,
It sounds as if you might be leaning towards a MAX of 3*? Ive HEARD 1* being a good number as well, but do not know the difference either way. I did 5* when I did the SOA on my 62, but that is a different animal than a 40.

Ill be doing this soon as well, and am curious as to what come up here.

Thanks,

Keith

I did 5-5.5 and it drives awesome but I lost my power steering on November and making turns and change lanes where hard

I used to make a living doing wheel alignments (among other things) and I never saw a solid axle truck (even big ones) with more than 3 degrees. Maybe there are some, but I didn't see any. I don't see any advantage to having more than 3 and there are down sides to having too much.

negative or positive

I have a question on the above post's: Are those numbers NEGATIVE OR POSITIVE? I believe factory is -1* - going to the back?

I've done 4-5º on two 40s and they both drive great. Saginaw power steering on both, with hydro assist on one of them.

Edit: for the above post: The top of the knuckle should be turn toward the rear of the vehicle.

The numbers are positive caster or when the top of the knuckle is rotated toward the rear, just like a bicycle.
