No I don't trailer my rig. But I hate to carry a ton of stuff while wheeling. Because of the weight. But you say it's not an issue? So carrying spare birfs, axles, driveshafts, tools and grease/fluids/oil would be fine? I was thinking of leaving the stuff back at camp/trailhead but if I break and can't limp back I would need to run back to camp/trailhead to get stuff and run back. I mean I wheel with buggies and I don't see them carrying any spare parts or tools. Are they just so light they rarely bust?

Given the weight of an 80 and the strength of the parts, I carry spares. A buggy usually weighs about half and is built better than the 80 with regard to breaking the heavier parts. I'd love to not carry any spares, but it would really suck to have to hike out 5miles and walk back with a set of axles and birfs or a driveline in tow. Generally speaking I have the following:

- front axles with birfs
- driveshaft
- spare DOM tube
- Box of fluids about the size of one of those fold top boxes they sell at Lowes (oil, sealkits, steering fluid, grease, etc)
- Tool box medium size
- Ratchet set
- Recovery box (straps, ratchet straps, shackles, winch control, gloves)

Ideally, I want to install a bed tool box in the back of the 80 where I cut off the top and throw everything in there, :). For now I have a pretty solid Idea of where everything needs to go when I pack. Also I don't wheel with more than 1 passenger typically (especially on the long trips so I have the whole back seat, but my spare tire along takes up A LOT of room)

Creeper, you would wheel spare free, lol:flipoff2:

subscribing. I have plans for a light 80

steps to a "light" 80

step 1 remove body
step 2 insert steering wheel in front of single driver seat.
step 3 pick any wheel and tire combo you like
step 4 buy a poncho. (maybe a sombrero to complete the ensemble?)

total weight now still 4,000lbs

:meh:

The word Light and 80 shouldnt be in the same sentence. thats like saying skinnny Oprah.

think Christo's Vlakvark, but with tube front doors, shortened a foot in rear, dovetailed, no liftgate, front fenders removed, no front bumper (only winch tray), fuel cell in rear bed. minimal exo-tube where needed...
gas tank doesn't need to be removed (but probably should be) for an H42 with toybox bolting perfectly up to a 3FE.

I also wonder how much Vlakvark as well as the short bus weighs.

As a rockcrawler, the short bus was/is heavy with undersized axles.. Honestly, not the best path. Its other name is Shamu btw, for a reason....~6000lbs loaded

I don't know but i love it! My diesel doesn't even have a fully boxed frame!

Landspeeder i have a tube bender if you need some tube bent. When you come down for the Crawfish boil, If you want, we can bend some tube.

Well that's IF we don't drink too much :beer:

your tube doors may end up looking like some Clydesdales

I used to think the same as you, an 80 not the best rock crawler path... but then I saw ftoy's do amazing things that I've only seen custom buggy's ($100K buggy's) do.... Well, the ftoy is just a mini/1st gen runner Crawler minus the body... so if an 80 can follow a 4Runner crawler then why can't that same ftoy principle be applied to the 80?
I don't have the money for a custom crawler.... i don't have the money for a ftoy, but i do have the money for an 80 and the knowledge of already chopping one up, coupled with the new found experience of an H42 bolted to a 3FE, now just gotta put a crawler behind the H42.... and then buy parts and bits and make adjustments as it goes.
Does the shortbus have dual cases?

Outperform a custom tubed crawler? NO. but be a badass rig that'll be fun to wheel? YES.

We will be WAY too busy eating, drinking and being Marry...

Plus, I'ma try to get Z-Man to do me some doors... he integrates factory latches into his doors and you can slam shut tube doors... it's slick I he does excellent work.

I am part of the homegrown crew....

Here are the specs of the Shamu
Christo Slee Profile - 1994 Land Cruiser - 2006 Ultimate Adventure - 4-Wheel & Off-Road Magazine

Build what you like :)

IMO, if you are going to strip the entire truck and go f toyish anyway, just start fresh, pull the drivetrain, buy a bender and 200ft of tube and get to work, trash that heavy frame from the get go.

I am The Shunt...
Please, no offense, but I have no clue what the homegrown crew is.

I'm pretty sure the reason we all are not doing what you suggest (which is the most reasonable thing to do) is because we're loyal dumbasses and want to keep it a Land Cruiser of sorts.... at least I am.
i would love to keep a 4 door 80 but the new smaller parks that have been popping up around the SouthEast will not let me keep an 80 series walrus on the obstacles without beating the crap out of it.
Plus it'll be cool to have a FJtoy

Whats that Baby Blue FJ40 in the background of that photo :flipoff2:

Homegrown is made of hardcore rigs that are mostly toyota parts..

The Cool thing about an 80 is that it can carry 6+ People in comfort.. The cool thing about an F-toy is it can keep up at king of the hammers and still finish respectbly.

i think it would be intresting to see how an F-toy built with all FJ80 parts vs Minitruck parts would turn out.

Exactly.
I ride with ftoys and exo'd mini's... it was the reason I chopped my first 80... and honestly, the 80 in that form on 37's kept up with them to a certain extent.... but the two ftoys i ride with can do anything in any park I've been to. The body of the 80 can not do every obstacle.
I'm not completely ready to go ftoy-80... but extremely close... we'll see.

All I need to do is tube the doors and I'll pretty much be there.

Do it Sam! is that what you're planning anyway? FZJToy.... lol. I said almost, just because i'm planning on keeping alot of stock parts in the FJToy... an FToy only has frame and suspension stock... and then the suspension is not stock, but rather stock location, setup, etc... I'm going to pretty much keep a cab and engine bay.

here's a pic of Marc's that i stop and watch in amazement everytime we wheel together... of course he's also one badass driver... took 1st this past weekend.

I concur sir. I would have thought by now the complete top would be off and just a cage, tube doors and maybe a soft top would be all thats left. Maybe a few body panels...

If I didn't like the 80 body style so much maybe i would do that. I just have a thing for nice bodies!

There was a rolled 80 that had my wheels turning, but it was in way to bad of shape. I was hoping that the front and side panels were in decent shape and i could just hack off the top and cage it. It was so bad i think the frame could have been tweaked :p

Here's what i had in mind..He has a build link here on mud its called
"help with my 3 link on 99 4runner".
4runner top cut off caged half doors.webp

so glad my body isn't nice.

That 3rd gen is sick.... looks like dan did with the Avocado.
