Damn that looks sweet. What's your impression of the screen quality? I've read a couple complains on Amazon of Google Maps looking washed out or too bright during the day, which gives me pause when considering going this route.

I dont have too many issues. The screen is glossy so if the sun is right on it then it can be hard to read but with the location of the radio in the dash any double din radio you use will have issues. It does not turn side to side so it does face straight to the back seat. The only issue i have with it is the touch controls, your hand and surface have to be clean to get a good reading. Sometimes out on the trail and the radio gets dusty i have to wipe it down to use it. I keep a microfiber in the center console to wipe it down. If i were to change one thing it would be to change the bottom touch buttons to tactile push buttons.

Quick pros and cons

Pros:
Google maps navigation like a modern car works a treat.
8 extra switches help minimize switches in the truck.
Lightbar at the bottom of the radio lights the shifting/cupholder area.
Other obvious advantages for having a new radio

Cons:
Shiny screen can be hard to read in direct sunlight. (what screen isn't)
Touch controls for volume and other controls at the bottom can be hit or miss on registering touch.

Ill get a few pictures of it on during the day and night.

Damn, now I'm seriously reconsidering this if money allows. Got a lot of maintenance and fix-up stuff to do before tackling the stereo system, but this looks like it'd be a sweet way to go.

Question though, since I can't seem to find a definitive answer on any of the retail sites; is the screen easily removable? I sometimes end up in somewhat shady areas (like pretty much all of Spokane) and want to be able to remove the screen and lock it up in my Tuffy console when I park.

Damn. That'd likely be a deal breaker for me, given where I sometimes find myself.

That is why I like the Joying Unit I have... super easy to pop it out and ribbon cable for disconnect that is long enough that durability shouldn't be too much of an issue.. Funny thing is that the screen is not needed to have the unit run, so if for some reason you had the radio app still up and then removed the screen for a park. The next time you start the truck up the radio app still loads and plays, just no screen. Shocked me when it happened randomly.

The first step for this project is to replace my rear heater unit with a custom fabbed (I think I'm going baltic birch ply) center console over the full length of the transmission tunnel. I'll wrap it with leather. Plan to fit an inverter there that will be hooked up to my dual battery system, allowing for easy charging of devices and such.

I get the FJ62 back from Well Sorted Automotive on Wednesday. I'll start drawing everything on a notepad then begin mocking it up with cardboard once I can take measurements. Plan on putting it into CAD to then have the fine details CNC'd. I'll be able to share the file with folks looking to do the same thing.

I ordered a Pitaka Magbar to place in the console, I think I'll place it as close to the firewall side as possible, hopefully with a bit of a slope. Will be nice to be able to charge mine and my wife's iphones easily with that.

Well..........

Got pregnant and bought a new home!

Hahahahaha - life ... once I get the garage up and running (need to drywall, add shop lights and outlets) I will start to lay out the plans again. I have everything I need - except for time. There's lots of good ideas in here though, I'll be sure to follow through!

Didn't see anything about Android when I looked it up. Works with the Apple stuff, but no mention of Android.
