Custom HeadLights.. Yay or Nay??

Here is an animated gif which shows the two different beam patterns. Both shots taken with the exact camera settings. Please note that I had to aim my lights very high to see anything, while the HIDs are aimed properly.

Oh, and a complete writeup on this is coming soon.

I hope you are interested.

Mike,

I'm interested and so are a few others, I suspect.:hillbilly:

It's cool that the ballasts are so small that they could be mounted right on the headlight.

BTW, did you have to melt the back of the housing in order to make it fit or something? (In the 2nd pic of the last post on the last page).

It wouldn't happen to be bi-xenon, would it?

ANYWAY, nice work and congrats on gaining the ability to be able to see it better at night.

Mot, the pic shows the bottom of the headlight. The ballast is under the headlight, cover down, and cover sealed with silicone just to make sure no water enters. The projector is glued with some type of yellow glue which is very strong and a bit flexible, and on top of that is a layer of silicone to ensure that if for whatever reason the glue lets go, the assembly is still sealed and still holds. Oh, and there are also two rivets somewhere there, so it's solid.

I had to cut off te whole back of the headlight as the HID projectors are much bigger and deeper than the ones the lights came with. This is no bi-xenon, but just a good Toyota projector (part no. 16337). They are used in Camry and some Lexus models (also in Avensis in Europe). The ballasts are Koito-Denso, so basically what you see is an OEM setup LOL.

I will need a few days to write the whole story, but I can tell you now that the job is tough and needs lots of patience but it's worth it. Once I switched to HID I realized how crappy the fluted headlights were. Compared to other fluted-lens lights, the cruiser has 'good' lighting but if we compare it to HID... oh maaaan... It's like coming out of a cave into broad sunlight.

Well I got some as well. Have not upgraded them to HID yet?
Just SS whiter bulbs and LED yellow side markers.
Happy so far, we will see how well they hold up offroad.

Only if you consider playing in 2-3 feet of snow wheeling:beer:

Spring is almost here.

I have put about 2000 mile on them with no issues.

Has the plastic turned color or faded any?

No, still clear and new looking. I leave the lights on most of the time and the cruiser is always garaged:cool:

jditom: where did you get your lights?
On ebay I've only found the black ones, which I may end up using.... but the clear look good too

also: what are the bulbs used in each lamp (hi and low) if you know?

I know that this is an old thread but I have a question relating to upgrading the bulbs. I've had these headlights for over a year and they seem to be holding up well except for some minor fogging when it rains. I noticed that they now sell these on ebay bundled with the H7 HID kit (eBay link). Has anyone upgraded using these hids?

I know that MikePL has retrofitted his with real projector HIDs. I'm sure that the H7 HID's won't even be close in terms of clarity. I just want to upgrade to these since it's cheaper and does not require any assembly modifications. I've seen ebay listings for H7 HID conversion kits for less than $100. Are these worth upgrading to?

Thanks,
Alex
