Night Driving in Baja?
Driving at night can be very dangerous due animals on the road –standing-sleeping- just hanging out. Fog near the coast was tough at night for me, but I had been driving for 20 hours and was pretty burnt. Also banditos can be a problem. I’ve never had that problem in Baja but have on the way from Puerto Vallarta to Acapulco while driving at night.
Driving at night can be very dangerous due animals on the road –standing-sleeping- just hanging out. Fog near the coast was tough at night for me, but I had been driving for 20 hours and was pretty burnt. Also banditos can be a problem. I’ve never had that problem in Baja but have on the way from Puerto Vallarta to Acapulco while driving at night.
The semis seem to drive much faster at night and many times they take up more than there share of the road. If you do drive at night dont do it while you are tired. There are many places where there is no shoulder just a drop.
Like others have said roads are narrow, no shoulder, no pull outs, sometime no center line, mostly no side line, animals, not many straight sections of road, and truck/bus drivers with no fear with bumpers that make ARBs weak.

Not fun but doable.Pay attention to warning signs they are real; Vatos(serious dips/wash outs), Topes(huge speed bumps), and Curva Peligrosa (dangerous curve and they are serious).
Heard stories but personaly never had a problem with banditos day or night.
If possible drive durring the day its very senic, and much safer. Ive read that 90% of fatalities on Mexican roads occur at night.

X2, or maybe even X3... don't do the night thing! there are lots of roadside memorials on that road for a reason... and yeah, when they say "topes" they MEAN it...
on a lighter note, I always wondered if the Mexican transportation people knew of a woman named "curva peligrosa" that they designed their roads after...

Night driving will kill you, and 20 hours is seriously underestimated. In 20 hours you're not even going to make it to San Ignacio...

i ran this through Microsoft Streets & Trips for you. here's what i found:
924 miles total
starting from San Diego @ 5am and driving till Midnight, then getting up on day two at 5am again should have you to La Paz around noon that day.
this is taking into account 30 minute breaks every 4 hours. gas would also have to be thought of.
if you were to only travel during daylight [5am - 7pm] - it would still have you there around late afternoon the second day. this is by far the more highly reasonable route to take.
i would HIGHLY recommend not driving at night. its just not worth it. if you don't have the time off for the trip down to take 2 days, you might want to think of alternatives.

Best to make it a 2 day drive from San Diego. Cross border early in morning, drive to Guerrero Negro and spend night in Hotel. $35.00 bucks. Leave early next morning be in La Paz by mid afternoon.

Do you have any interest in a 67 FJ-45 long bed? I have one in my yard here that is in really good shape and ready to be restored. I live one hour south of La Paz.

Ok, I got it... no driving at night. Maybe I was a little ambitious to go straight through anyway. I have the time, just want to get there quick, that's all. I think I will stick to daytime hours and it will work out well anyway. Thanks guys for all the help and Loeky for doing the Microsoft search... and yes, Wayne, your 67 FJ-45 sounds good, I just don't have a means of getting it home or the $$$ to do anything with it. Cheers, though.
