i just got back from an african safari and managed to snap a few quick pics of cruisers. i was hoping to be riding in a cruiser but spent 20 days riding in a defender tdi. the lodges basically use landcruisers or landrovers exclusively. every driver shared the same opinion that the landrover had a better ride and good power but broke down alot. they loved the landcruisers because the rarely broke. good to hear from those who use them in such a harsh area.

i only saw a few 60/62's because we were way out in the bush most of the time.

the guides were more interested in pictures of my 60 then pics of my son.

oh, one of the highlights was pulling an x5 out of the sand in chobe botswana. the guy was clueless. " my vehicle just won't continue forward, i don't know why". i told him it was because he wasn't on the pavement. he sort of laughed:)

Nice roof rack in the last pic. also nice mirrors, they're the same troopers and the economic 70series come with here in Venezuela.
I think i'm going to get them soon.

cool place to use a cruiser:grinpimp:

actually those pics with the 62 going through the gate are from zambia. the others are from namibia and botswana. it was a great trip. i saw a sweet 60 drive by that said "big game research" but wasn't quick enough to get a pic.

there were lot's of those cruisers used as safari vehicles like those in the post above and this one. i don't know the model though.

this croc ate a guy while he was wading out to get his nets in december. they caught it by shooting a baboon and tying it to a giant hook and pulling it in by hand. they found the guys legs inside it's belly. creepy.

they're mostly 75series long vans or pickups. they convert them into safari vehicles

where do you find a swing out spare tire carrier that mounts to the stock bumper?
Is the best bet to just fab one on my own?

So BigBrown,

did most of the rigs Rovers and Cruisers, that were not open air, have A/C? I've wondered if they bothered to have that on true working "outback" vehicles. Kinda figured if they did have it a one time when it did break (the A/C) they'c just let it go..

the beemers got a nice rack....not the one on the vehicle tho':grinpimp:

here kittly kitty

I was watching a holiday show last week which featured a nice 75 series troop carrier complete with dual rear wheel carrier.

All very nice until it occurred to me that getting out in lion infested country (Masai Mara) to change a wheel would not be the most enjoyable aspect of the trip.

Did they discuss how they carry out repairs whilst fighting off 500lbs of teeth and claws?

funny you should say that. we found a pride of 16 female lions (in zimbabwa). we watched for a bit, then headed down to a watering hole where they often drink. on the way we got a good size branch caught in the spring. my guide was not so mechanically inclined and kept twisting and pulling on it. i finally got out and lifted the weight off the spring so she could pull it out. upon getting in again i noticed the pride walking single file not more then 25 feet from the vehicle. they apparently had full bellies and only cared about water at that point. we ended the night with elephants barreling through the brush and chasing the lions away. elephants are the true kings out there i believe. very few of the animals we saw were scared or aggressive toward the vehicle.

i only rode in open safari vehicles. i rode in small planes to each lodge.

ok, one more picture for all you fisherman/landcruiser guys....

this is a 3 pound nembwe (sp?). i'd describe it as a bass on steroids. oh, and we fished with hippos and crocks within eye sight. scary and fun.

That's a cool license plate light in your second photograph.

there is a lic. plate somewhat like that on a old Land Rover that sets in front of a body shop here in my town. Always wondered where it was from.
