Hey Sparky,
Picked up my new delilbliss hvlp gun this am. Pretty sweet for $150...two tips included, plus a liner system for easy clean up. With luck I'll try it out on Monday...shooting the right side of the 40 post roll over. I let you know how it sprays...but I think my old gun knows somethings up.

I have a limited amount of experience on this. I wanted my frame off 73 painted right. The guy I sired to do it said that acrylic enamel 1 coat would be the most original and look the best. Paid $1500 for it. It was so bad I did it again myself. I learned. AE is fine in very limited applications. On my 62 I decided to paint it myself. I used base and clear and did it in the shop. Came out almost perfect, actually 100% perfect if you consider my painter ability. B+C seems to be the most forgiving for the DIY painter. You can also get an excellent deep coat. The single stage sounds good but I think you will be paying more for the tech required to apply it correctly. One thing, almost any paint will look good if the prep is good. Prep is 95% of the job.

[glow=red,5,300]A FEW QUARTS OF GLOSS BLACK RUSTOLEUM, A 19.99 TOOL SHOW PAINT GUN, AND DONT LOOK BACK! ISNT THAT RIGHT DEEP SOUTH? ;)
ALTHOUGH YOU'LL WANT THE SAFETY RED INSTEAD OF THE GLOSS BLACK I WENT WITH. IT LOOKS GOOD, TRUST ME. MATT[/glow]

Little update...I didn't shoot with the new HVLP gun on monday...could have but opted to sand blast window frames and a spare fender and other misc bits and get them ready for color first. I was outta gas and the clean up after blasting wore my old ass out. I recall now how much I hate blasting. Seems it's always hotter and humider than hell... and sand out of every orfice...kind of like the beach only without the pleasantries of the ocean. I swear if I was blasting in Feb...it would be 95 degrees out with 99% humidity. None the less before I head with family this Sun to the MLL championship at Villanova....my 40 will be in paint and restored to it's pre roll over condition. HVLP paint will be shot on Sat. no questions left.

I agree FIXXXXAH but I have zero paint knowledge (other than rattle can).

What I do know is the majority of paint guys in my area are a bit burned in the brain (to many chemicals without a respirator) and still charge more than $1,000 for a econo type single stage paint job that looks like it was sprayed on the front lawn. I believe that I could do a job as good the ones I have seen locally.

Like alot of you here I am fed up with the cost and headache associated with a "proper" paint job, so I plan on using cheaper methods and learning the finer arts of paint prep. to do my own work. :D

i couldnt help but notice the bad rap on the orange peel. did the original paint of the cruiser come with the factory orange peel finish like with the new models that come out? what would a better finish flat or with a little orange peel like factory? ???

Well broke out the new hvlp gun today to get me back to pre -roll status. The short story...I like the gun. Things that went wrong...well the brand new regulator with gauge that I bought to put on the brand new gun...the gauge didn't work. Did I head to the separator and dial it back there at that gauge ...no. fawk that, I've got a highly calibrated ear. Adjusted it to where it sounded right...less pressure than "normal" and blow on the first coat. Damn this came out sweet, :D no orange peel...no sandy desert areas...much joy. Second coat...second guessing self turn down the pressure a bit...oh great lookie here orange peel...just like factory. Third time around...whoops over corrected a bit...little deserty on the quarter...move a little closer and back it down for a quick recoat...well at least no runs and back to a little orange peel. Should have left it alone after the first coat...but ya always have to futz with a new toy a little. End of the day...I like the gun :D and the repair looks good, :D too good the rest of the paint will need a buffer run across it. And I hate buffing. >:(

I went out and bought an HVLP gun today too.
Just a $80 Husky gravity feed from Home Depot, but it works great! Painted some furniture to get some practice before I start on the car, but its incredibly easy to use and gives great results. Used about 1/4 the paint I would have with a brush and its a much much better finish.
