Rolling down the highway with the cruise control set and I start up a hill. After it slows down some it'll kick down out of OD to get up the hill. Once the hill is crested and the road levels back out or even goes back downhill, the tranny won't shift back into OD. I have to tap the brake to shut the cruise off, then it'll kick back into OD and I can reset the cruise.

This is an all stock 94. Thoughts?

Mine does that too, it takes a while but it eventually goes back into OD.

It drives me crazy and I usually end up "forcing" it back into OD by killing the cruise control.

Mine is also a 94

If you kick it out of OD with the button when you head up the hill, it will go back in easier when you get to the top. Not sure why though...

According to the factory wiring diagram, once the truck reaches the top of the hill, the CC sends a signal to the ECU to allow it to shift back into OD, after approx. 6 seconds. If someone has a '94 book, maybe you can get them to photo the "Service Hints" adjacent to the wiring diagram. It tells you how and where to toubleshoot this by checking system voltage and ohms. I'll send you the '97 if you can confirm its the same.

6 seconds sounds about right for mine too...always wondered why it didn't return immediately....

I've gotten in the habit of switching off OD when it downshifts so the torque convertor locks up in 3rd gear (dropping rpm's by 200ish)....then manually clicking the OD back on once cresting the hill.

Thanks all. If someone has the troubleshooting information, that would be great. I'll start kicking it out of OD with the button.

Coming home on Saturday into a stiff headwind and the radio playing so I couldn't hear the engine - I looked down at one point and I'm happily cruising down a level highway doing 70 at around 3400 rpm. :D
