look into some kind of electromagnet. it will run your battery, though.
Another possibility is a GM-style trunk lock, the one in my '91 Olds is vacuum driven, and pops open with a push of the button, if the engine's on.

Honestly, though, I'd recommend keeping the lock, it's reliable, simple, and foolproof, the more equipment you add to your rig, the more chances you have of something fail.
 
Or you can look through the junk yard for the numerous cars and trucks that have a cable pull to operate the gas door.
