heres a picture with 285s after i put on sliders...
not crazy but, really, you d be completely amazed what you can drag the 80 through once you put on sliders!

This reminds me. I'm going to be going on a 4 day weekend in the CO mountains next week. Can't afford sliders yet, but should I take the stock running boards off for more clearance on the sides, or leave 'em on for now and get less clearance but a bit of protection?

Any history of stock running boards bending into the side of the vehicle and causing more damage than if they were off?

Absolutely, Check in the FAQ section for photos of slider damage. TAKE RUNNING BOARDS OFF! (for wheeling).

Yeah, definitely stay away from Holy Cross City trail with running boards on, even if they are on an 80. If you don't have sliders and run it, you're taking your chances on your driving skills.

That place is rugged. I haven't been up it with the 80 yet, but have been on it in a stock FJ55 and a 93 Rodeo with the big tire package. Had to turn the Rodeo around to avoid rocker panel damage (beyond the small crease I put in it anyway). Treat that trail with respect if you value your bodywork

stock suspenders, 285's

Near Breckenridge CO. Could have used a spotter!

Nice job to the guy who ran holy cross with stock suspension.

I can't wait to move to Colorado in August! It is going to open up a whole new world of wheeling!

I would dare say that you CANNOT afford to not have sliders, if you're going wheeling on rocks.

If you don't have them, simply don't go 4wheeling where you might need them. Sliders or slider steps are much cheaper than body damage.

I never seem to have my camera unless I'm in a parking lot or something. Oh well. It's all I got.

Stock suspension with 33"s.

The previous was just for perspective. Here's a better picture of the flex of stock suspension. Not great, but it works much of the time.

With Pics like these, I think I might get a winch first since I don't have lockers :(

I wish I had pictures of some of the things I did with my 80 while it was still stock. Crazy is the right word....I almost rolled it several times but it is an awesome vehicle, even in stock form. I have since done a lot of mods as you can see in my signature block. Here is the order I would do the major mods in:

1. Add armor. Sliders first, skid plate second bumpers third, including a winch. This will protect the vehicles from damage from underneath.
2. Add lift and larger tires. I went with 3.5 inch lift and 35 inch tires simply to clear more obsticles.
3. Add lockers. This is the single most important thing to do from a performance perspective if you don't have factory lockers. It is simply incredible the things you can do with an 80 that is locked.
4. Regear when you are adding lockers if your lift is higher than 2.5 inches. I went to 4.88.
