The head is cracked on my 81 FJ-60. Which heads are usable on this engine? 79 and up or 81 and up?

I don't really know the years, but any of the heads that came with the flat top pistons should work, so that's 81 and up.

Or you could mess with all that machine work as suggested by weak-link.

Did you have an overheat?

Yeah - long story. Smog pump locked up and when I opened it up - there was not much left inside except small bearings that were loose. Shortly after started overheating. Was losing water but nothing showed up outside the engine. Ran a compression check and #1 & 2 cylinders were about 20 pounds low. Water was lightly spraying out of the #2 cylinder. #2 had a crack in it that must have been leaking.

I would find one 81 and up to keep the lighter valve train, and the ease of use, even if you skin the other head you will loose a little compression, So pick one up and have it rebuilt, I think they have cost me less that a new toyota gasket set to be machined, Larry

Does anyone know of a way to tell from the serial number on the head if it is an 81 or newer?

Do a Search, the topic of head interghancability was covered in heavy detail several months back.
