Camped out in Sheep's Canyon in Anza-Borrego this weekend. Went out via Coyote Canyon trail and the third water crossing (the fun deep one) has been taken out. It seemed like they filled it in. There was actually more water in the first and second crossings than the third one. I was kinda disappointed that they did that, as I always thought that was one of the best parts of that trail. The rocky bypass hill seemed a little looser and rougher than the last time I was up there in the spring, so that was fun. Saw a couple 80's and one 40 out there (no one I recognized from here) and a ton of Bronco's (apparently it was Bronco Days out there this weekend).

cool pics! what do you mean they took the river out? did they divert the water or is is just low?

I hope they did not do that. At this point they might as well just pave the whole godamn thing. I have seen that trail go from somewhat challenging to nothing in the past 10 years. Back in the day it was somewhat of a challenge to get up there and once you got there, there was nobody up there. Now it is a zoo.

anyhow, god I sound like an old fart. :)

From another old fart - x2 on your comments.

That'd truly suck if they took that crossing out completely. They's have to dirvert it somehow and I can't see the state park system doing something that ecologically damaging. That 3rd crossing was the first good deterent keeping rif raf out of the rest of the beautiful area back there! Paving/smoothing out the rock gardens a couple of years ago was bad enough. Ranger told us that was done to ease INS access.

I highly doubt they would divert the river. It sounds more like they added a layer of bedrock raising the river floor. :frown:

I heard the same they diverted the trail to bypass the third crossing, but haven't confirmed. Do you have any pics of the crossing?

I am heading out there on black friday to go up coyote canyon and see the sculptures.

Pics of the third crossing, or what's left of it, etc. will be necessary!!!!

I'm interested in checking out Coyote Canyon this weekend (Thanksgiving holiday). Anyone have plans to go out to Anza Borrego?

Where area the sculptures at? I haven't seen them before. Hoping against hope but Upper and Lower Coyote are still closed in the middle? Going to hit upper this weekend from my buddy's place in Anza, was hoping go to lower too but I don't feel like going all the way around to do an out and back.

Look to the west as you travel down Di Giorgio rd, before the orchards, you should see them.
As far as diverting the trail around the third crossing, IMO the park did more damage than vehicles ever would. Piled up the debris along the new trail and blocked the old one with boulders. They also graded the trail along the creek just past the gate, and dug a channel for the creek so you don't travel in it.

Much obliged.
