Could this be anything other than a bad CV boot/joint?

Went to air back up today. Seen a MESS on the passenger front side. This is the stock CV joint (110K), and 2nd boot (60K). Did the boot crack? The inside boot? Can the mess be this great this soon? It's a grey-ish looking grease spewed all over the place. It wasn't there when I aired down yesterday.

It couldn't be anything else could it?

John,

That looks like it is contaminated. Some water crossing maybe. It also looks like the boot cracked - it usually leaks from the ends where the clamp is. Try no to drive it anymore than you need to because the CV's might get damaged not having any grease in there.

It is strange the boots would crack after only 50k miles or so. The bellows shouldn't touch one another when it is spinning, it rubs a little when you are turning but not for sustain periods.

Don't worry John, both mine look just like that;)

Just go to the self car wash and wash it off:beer:

On a serious note, the clamp may have gotten loose or a stick may have damaged the boot when we were wheeling on Sunday.

I seem to remember a thread where someone re-greased theirs and put on a new clamp while it was still installed.

Compared to mine this looks like maybe the boot is cracked. With that much oil/grease spewing I would get it taken care of sooner rather than later. FYI: There are a few of us that have driven for thousands of miles with leaking boot syndrom...fully expecting to replace the entire shaft assembly. But if you have any hope of just rebooting yours better get it attended to pronto.

That sucker let loose on ya !

Mine leak a fair amount, but it would take quite a few miles to accumulate that much grease. I would get those boots outta there and reboot it. :)

A firm new boot , fresh grease and a nice tight clamp will make that CV feel right at home.. Umm, that sounded kinda Xrated..(sorry)

Actually, I need to do the same thing on mine.. but I am waiting for Toyota to offer Reman CV shafts for the 100, they make em for almost every other Toy that I dont see why they wont eventually offer them for the LC..( unless it cause of that 8,700 or so units they sold in the US last year ?)..

Let us know what the cause of the leak was !

Sin,

Ebay CV's for less than $100 each...

New or rebuilt ? I will have to look into that , I`ve never noticed any for sale (but then again I wasnt really lookin) , but now I think its time to either do some CV maintenance ( I.E. boots/grease ) or throw a fresh set of shafts in and run it like hell forever. :)

Thanks guys. I'm just gonna order a new CV. I have a 1-year old one on the other side. I'll have 2 news ones then I'll boot kit the old one for a spare.

Did anybody understand what I just wrote? :D

yep...

That is what I am in the process of doing right now!

Has anyone looked at using a good silicone boot?
I would rather have mine re-done. I don’t partially like the idea of re-man parts. I picture a bucket full of bearings & shafts just being put together with out matching the anything.
It’s like mixing the bearings on any car, just a no no to me.
But if its worn out, then that’s going to be your only cheap option.

I thought of silicone for boot material...I think it might be a better material that the seemingly too stiff and crack-prone material used now. But where would we get them #1...and #2 I'll bet they're expensive even if you can find 'em.

IIRC the ones on my GVR4 are silicone, I’ll dig in my receipts and make sure.

FYI, my right outer boot recently started leaking, and I ordered a new boot kit for both joints from CDan. 2 new boots, 4 new clamps, and 2 large tubes of lube (all factory Toyota parts) ....shipped to me for $31.00.......

dnp...as you probably know, the key to using just the boot kit is getting the CV apart and boots on before the internals get contaminated with dirt/grit/water. Sometimes, as was the case with my CV leak, the boot clamp just gets tired/stressed (I guess) and adding a simple hose clamp can extend the life of the boot/cv...again if you catch it in time.

Yeah, you're right. I probably only have a leaking boot, but I couldn't stop wondering what was going on under the boot. Therefore, having a friend who's a tech at a local Toyota store, I just got the complete kit and asked him to remove and inspect both CV's.......hope I caught it in time!!!
