Thank you Shreveport Motorsports BMW!

A short two hundred miles after a nearly thousand dollar dealer service on my 2001 650 Dakar I started having trouble with it stalling. Read the book and decided to check the battery(easier said than done on this bike as you have to remove the seat AND five cowling sections to get to it). Checked OK but charged it anyway. After a charge I went to crank it to check the voltage drop and ... Smoke from the wiring harness up by the ignition switch! Turned the key off real quick but no joy as whatever melted had basically hot wired the bike. Yanked the battery leads to kill the power. Good thing the cowling was already off or the damned thing would have burnt to the ground!

Took me a while to find it but they pinched the ignition and headlight wiring harness between the clutch cable and the frame. Good news is that it was just a short pigtail with plugs at each end so a new section of harness and some proper re-routing and she is good as new! Won't be wasting my money in Shreveport anymore!:bang:
